Making the switch to Rotella.

I'm making the jump to running Rotella in my '09 KLR650. I picked up a gallon of 10-40 dino oil. Is this the right viscosity or should I run a different grade? The manual for the KLR calls for 10-40. Thanks in advance!

I've used the Rotella 15W40 in my '09 since it was new. I just use the 15 because all the farmers around here use it in their equipment and gallon jugs of it are always on sale cheap. You never see the 10W/40 in gallon jugs on sale. If it was, I'd use it.

I believe the manual calls for 10W40, so you should be good to go.
I have been using Rotella T6 (fully synthetic) in my '09 since the warranty expired. This is rated 5W40 (better than 10W40?). No issues.

No issues, but as mentioned some run Rotella 15-40.
I mentioned this as probably more use this stuff more than any other oil
from my readings on this site.
I prefer a little heavier oil due to the pounding the crank bearing is taking
from one massive cylinder. I put in two qts 20-50 and top it off with 10-40.
Always dino just cuz it's Cheaper and changing it twice a year keeps it very
clean. Dino possibly helps with clutch non-slippage too??

This is my son, with whom I am well pleased." ----God

I use the 15W-40.
I had a modded DRZ400 that guys were talking about running synthetic 20w-50 oil in it. I did it and the bike shifted fantastic until about 500-600 miles. That got expensize quick so I tried the synthetic Rotella and it started shifting bad about 300 miles. I then went to cheap Rotella 15w-40 and it shifted great until around 500 miles. Needless to say, that's what she got until I finally sold her.

Savage,
I would have suggested that you TRY a True Motorcycle Oil. But ya' sold it.
I personally do not believe that an automotive oil 'gas or diesel' graded, has the proper additive package for a wet clutch or transmission gears.

Maybe "good enough engineering", maybe not quite. (Of the chosen oil.)
Have ya' read my oil analysis thread? http://www.klrforum.com/showthread.php?t=38962
Would you care to have your chosen oil compared to my chosen oil? Same mileage! 3000 or 5000 miles!
I would really like to see/read your results! Please.

The 20w-50 was a MC oil.

I switched to Rotella 6T when I changed my oil last week. I can't tell any difference so far. I'm hoping for less oil use 'cause the syn oil may not break down as quickly. But in reality, it will probably burn just as much oil regardless of what I use. We shall see.

It was interesting that, immediately after the change to Rotella 6T, and going for a ride, I could not change into neutral with the engine off after parking the bike. I always like to start the engine with the bike in neutral to prevent the dreaded lurch, but with Rotella 6T, the bike won't change into neutral with engine off. This may change as I put more miles on. Now have 16,000 miles on the bike; all except the last 50 miles using Kawasaki dino 10w40 oil.
