08 KLR Stalling Problem - HUGE FACTORY DEFECT

My 08 has been at the dealer now for the 3rd time - stalls intermittently when idling after warm, then it stalled at 35 mph. The dealer now says it's happening on many 08 KLR's - stalling problems. They say Kawasaki says its the decompressor valve on the camshaft that is defective on virtually ALL 08 KLR's and they currently are doing an "R&D" to fix it. In the meantime they say they are doing a temporary fix by weakening the spring. Whatever that means. This is a HUGE problems at least here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

If I would have known about this, I wouldn't have bought an 08 KLR!

Any comments, suggestions, experiences?

I don't think anyone knew about this defect. Unfortunately this is part of the learning curve whenever a newer updated bike is released to the public. At least Kawasaki is admitting to a problem and looking for a fix, and I am sure will offer a recall once they have it under control. They never did admit to doohickey failure until the 08 was released and then only admitted passively that there was a problem by saying the lever had been upgraded.

You say its a HUGE problem, funny this is the first I have heard of it, my 08 has 4000 miles on her and runs like a champ... just talked to my twin brother who is the service manager where I bought my 08. they have sold some 40 klr's and guess what, not one of them has had any issue like you are talkin about, must be the ones sent to the Nooks that have the issues...

Stalling?

Got 10,000+ with no issue of stalling. Oil consumption WAS another issue. Swapped out the rings with real ones and that problem is history now.

Hope you get the satisfaction you are looking for.

Mine and all the others I have met have no problem. My buddy is a Kaw mechanic at the Kaw shop and has never even herd of this and he has an 08.He checked for bulletins and there are none. I think you are getting the run around by an incompetent dealer.
Good Luck with that

stalling problem "fixed"

thanks for all of your feedback! What they actually now say is that the problem is cold starting on some KLRS.

On mine, the dealer just cleaned the carb and so far so good...hasn't stalled again.

I'm glad that no one else is having this kind of problem.
