Strange Sounds

So I have had my 08 for almost 4 months now and for 3 and a half months it has been making this noise. I will describe it as best I can. I will ride the bike about 10 minutes(bike is warmed up but not super hot) and will come to a stop. When I start to accelerate again a strange hissing/popping noise starts to happen. It almost sounds like water is being sprikled onto a hot pan or steam escaping from a gasket. It is difficult to describe but is very audible over the engine. This is even more so on a hot day. So in first gear as I accelerate it makes this noise but when I go to shift into secound and I let off the gas a little it stops. But then as I accelerate again the nosie returns? This happens all the way till 5th gear were the engine and the sound of the wind seem to drone it out. So I don't know what the deal is. I will put it in neutral and rev the engine to see If I can see anything but the bike will not make the noise in neutral. Its like the bike has to be under a load in a gear for it to do it. I have checked ever where for a sign of a leak. The sound is coming up between the left and right shrouds up in front of the gas tank. I thought radiator was problem because of sound and the bike has to be some what hot for the noise to happen. I have taken it to the dealer for other reason and had them check out the noise. They can't seem to find anything. If anyone has some ideas or sugestions for me. Thanks, Dave

Now that is a new noise I have not heard of before. Have you checked the coolant resevoir on the right hand side? Maybe the lines or the cap. Is the radiator cap on tight?

I have checked the lines but I will check them again. As far as the caps go they seem to be on tight and seated flush. I am puzzled. All I know is that it only does it when the bike is warmed up and I am actually riding it. I will check the radiator again for a pinhole leak. So far I have not seen anything. Thanks for responding. I have an 08 and get a tinging sound under similar situations. Iím thinking itís the heat shield. They do have a little movement.

Could this be your issue? Although, Iím not really sure itís my issue!

Iam haveing a funny sound to but not like that have you checked you exast bolts coming out of the head you say it dose it when you excelarate it could be breaking seal under load from a bolt loose or cracked gasket. still looking into my sound.

I have tomorrow off so I am going to go over everything again to see if I missed something. The noise has been getting louder recently but it has been 95 degrees all week with 100 on the horizon. If I can't find anything I think I might take it to another dealer to see if they can't find what's up.

I know exactly what you're talking about. My 06 makes the exact same noise. I have been thinking about brinigng it up here as well. I'm glad I'm not the only one hearing that weird noise. Can't wait to hear what it might be.

??????? I give up. I took off the shroud covers and rode it around for 25 minutes trying to figure it out. I checked everything that I could think of and saw nothing that seemed to be wrong. The noise sounds like it comes from the left side of the bike up under the gas tank. The problem is I have to be riding the bike in order for it to make the noise. So it is hard to locate it. I think I am going to have to take it back to a dealer to get an expert on it. Dave

Hi hugegladiator
Youíre not alone. I have a 08 it sounds the same. Kawasaki told me it's normal. No way it sounds so bad my son will not ride next or behind me anymore he thinks the bike is falling apart. Iím doing the doo next week to see if that changes anything. Like you I have removed everything off the KLR but what it needs to run and it still dose it. If I make any head way I will let you know. Look at your Speedo needle in neutral around 3000 rpm my needle will jump around only about 3000 rpm's. Good luck

Strange Sounds

Hi hugegladiator
I put the doohickey in this weekend and what a difference. I didn't loosen the adjustment until I could see the spring and chain like described in Devon's document. What I found was shocking The spring was not doing anything and the chain was loose and I mean loose. After putting in Mikeís doohickey and the stainless steal spring the chain pull back snug. After it was all together ran it for 5 milles and did the adjustment I did a 100 mile run with none of the sounds like you and I had. It sounds like a completely different bike. Good luck and if you do it get the tools you will need them.
