Dirt tires for KLR650?

Seems like the 17 in. back tire makes it harder to find a good set of knobby dirt tires which are still street legal for some street use. Any suggestions for a good set of 90/10 or 80/20 style of dirt tires for the KLR-650? ... or a good website for tires? Thx for any info.

Dunlop D606's sound like what you might be after
I'm trying out a Kenda Trakmaster 2 on the back of my WRR right now but I don't think it would hold up for as long under a heavier bike like a KLR. Definitely aggressive though! Lol!

Have TrakMaster IIs front and rear on my Generation 1 KLR650.

Rear tire wears rather well; my critics say the front wears excessively. I say, "Who cares? They're quite inexpensive!"

These tires, in my experience, are surprisingly versatile on pavement. Not that you want to race the sport bikes on the twisties with 'em, but . . . they stick pretty good on concrete and asphalt; safely maintain Interstate speeds.

3.25-21, and 5.60-17, IIRC (Reckon that translates nowadays to, 80/100x21, and 130/90x17. I thought more size variety existed in the old "inch" sizes. Got 'em on both KLR650 and KLR250.

Full disclosure: Have Continental Trail Attacks on KLR650 "street" rims (installed when long highway rides are imminent).

I've switched to a more street-oriented tire, but I always liked the Shinko 244. The back wore out fast (2500 miles or so for me) and the front has a 75mph Speed Rating, but I always liked their manners on-road and off.

I'm another who has liked his set of Shinko 244s. I think I'm up to about 5,000 miles on the current set, and the rear is getting down to the wear marks... They're a decent and quite inexpensive tire. Rocky Mountain ATVMC will sell you a set of both the front and rear tire for less than $90. At that price, hell, 3,000 miles is a bargain!

That being said, and in the interest of full disclosure, I'll be spooning on a Shinko 805 on the rear and a Shinko 804 on the front when the front finally gets here... They're a more aggressive "big block" type of knobby that should work well for my summer plans of exploring the dirt / gravel around Tooele County, UT.

Mefo Stonemaster is a 90/10 DOT legal tire. Similar to a D606.

Full disclosure, I've not run a Stonemaster. I run Mefo Explorers.

Thanks folks. Very helpful. Those Shinkos and the Explorers do not look aggressive enough for what I was thinking of.

I do like the looks of those Dunlops, and the Stonemaster.

Did you check out the Shinko 804 / 805s?

Here's a rear TrakMaster II with about 3,000 mostly-pavement miles on it:

Aggressive enough? Still a DOT tire.

A somewhat lower-mileage rear TrakMaster II:

I do like the Trakmaster 2's! Plus, you can almost get two of them for the price of one 606, a bargain in my books
