Rear Wheel Bearings

On a long ride today I was about 75 miles from home and while hitting some good twisty roads I felt a shudder in the rear end. I pulled over thinking I had a tire going down. The wheel was loose up and down which tells me wheel bearing. I limped it home and just took off my shoes.

How hard is it to replace the bearings? Need to be pressed out and then back in? Gotta get it fixed as it is my everyday back & forth to work ride.

Advice anyone? Bike just turned 12K miles with absolutely no probs.... ever....

Wheel bearings are pretty easy. You don't need a press. You can knock out the old ones from the opposite side with a hammer and punch. I used a piece of PVC pipe to tap the new ones in. Get new bearings that are sealed on both sides.

Very easy Brian.They will tap out with very little effort.On the two inside ones that are actually on the hub,there is a center tube that runs thru the middle that the axle goes thru.One end will move and the other end is "set". The end that moves is the bearing you knock out first with a long punch or dow from the other side.It will move over to one side so you can get to the edge of the bearings.Once you get them out go to a bearing shop with the used bearings and they will mic them and hand you a new set for a third of a cost.
