Thumbs up Buying a damaged KLR 650 - Radiator Help

Hey everyone. I'm planning on buying a used 2009 KLR 650 tomorrow for $1500. The only problem is the guy dumped the bike on a trail ride a couple of weeks ago. This caused the radiator to break and leak out all the coolant. It also caused the neutral indicator light to go out. Other than that the bike seems solid.

I've noticed to get a replacement radiator from Kawasaki it will cost about $850 which I don't want to do. Theres some from china as well that sell on eBay for $120. Has anyone ever bought these? How did they work out? Is there anyway of repairing the radiator yourself??

Also before I buy the bike would there be any other common issues with the KLR that I should check for? The bike has about 25,000 miles.

Thanks for your help, just looking for some advice before I buy the bike.

radiator

I bought one for my '09 last year. It was oversized so I couldn't use my lower forward bolts. I haven't had any overheating issues, actually runs a little cooler.
There are a few places that have already had them imported, so there's no customs issues.

There's room for all of gods creatures......Right next to the mashed potatoes.

Repair radiator yourself? Depends upon extent of damage, and how good you are with a soldering iron and/or J-B Weld. A radiator shop may be able to repair it, but . . . even they would have to see it.

Things to look for . . . some '08/'09 KLR650s consumed excessive oil; might try to find out whether this one was/is an oil burner and whether the problem has been fixed, if et ever existed.

I have had good luck with the chinese radiators. I am actually on my second one. This is not the fault of the radiators but of my stubborn decision to ride single track without engine guards. I broke the first and second radiator essentially the same way. Twisted them badly. The last radiator I got from China did appear to have a bad cap but I didnt care because I have two more caps from the previous radiators. :P The only issue with the chinese ones is you might have to do some bending of the tabs to get everything to line up correctly but that is actually pretty easy. The first one I got was just about a perfect fit, the second one took some bending to get right. As far as how they cool, the aftermarket ones seem to be pretty on par with the OEM one as far as I can tell. Reliability I am not sure on yet, because I broke the first aftermarket one pretty quickly and I have just gotten to riding after winter wince I put on the second. I cant really imagine what would go wrong with it, they arent exactly high tech pieces of equipment.

I recall reading about a guy on Facebook that went for one of the chinese rads as well, he was very happy with it. I think he might have had to tweak it a little as well though.
