new owner of 09 with spark problem

Just traded for an 09 KLR650 as I have always wanted one and I may have gotten hosed a little. This bike looks almost perfect with no scratches and just very light wear all around. Drove two hours to meet the guy and when he went to start it , it didn't start right up and all most killed the battery then it backfired and started right up and idled perfect. I think he made up some lame excuse and said hmmm that's never happened before. Maybe because of the gas sloshing around or some other bs Like that. I drove it and it drives great, idles perfect and looks great and this deal was fir a trade on a 76 cb750 that was highly customized So we shook hands and back home I went. Now for two days it d ire s the exact same thing. I work on bikes alot so this didn't scare me any. Everytuesday I go to cold start I choke it and it starts and starts and takes a little while almost draining the battery then it backfires and the next press of the starter it starts right up and runs fine the whole rest of the ride. Seems to start back easy after warm.

Pulled the tank seat bags and all that today and have found the problem . It is not getting consistent spark at startup. I trimmed the plug wire back a little after removing the plug cap and when holding g it to the jug it doesn't spark consistent. When the battery starts getting low like almost dead then it is sparking "tap tap tap" like it should
So in theory the no spark is loading the exhaust with mixture till it finally sparks and backfires then starts.

Found a thread here with the exact same symptoms to the t happening
http://www.klrforum.com/how-tos-tech...47/topics/9767

99% sure this is electrically related somehow. Thinking if it were a bad coil it would either be sparking or not at all .
I checked all the coil connects removed and replaced them Making sure they were clean and had good contact. I am baffled why this is only happening at startup. After it starts it's getting extra juice from the stator so maybe that's helping. I checked my battery and 12.6v ....it seems like the battery doesn't last too long though before it almost dies. Like maybe 30-40 seconds cranking total time (not all at once lol)

What should I do? Was gonna get a new battery to just rule out a weak cranking amp battery .Past that I have never ran into this problem. If I had intermitant spark problem it was never when I was trying to start only and then after would run fine. Sad these bike don't have a kicker. Don't wanna get stranded from a dead battery. Guy has also hardwired in a auxiliary gps power source/ charger and a switch for the fan to turn on or off . Other then that it all looks virgin and clean....

Sorry for the long post, it's my first better make it good one right?

There are a few electrical gurus than me here but I'm thinking if your battery is 12.6V with no load when you hit the starter you won't get enough. Try hooking a booster battery from your car to it with cables. Car not running of course.

If it were mine and I suspected it was not getting spark to the plug, I would try some experiments.

Try jumping to a car battery.
Try starting with the side stand raised.

I'm gonna' suggest, OLD GAS/ BAD GAS. Trying to varnish the pilot jet hole, Closed, Over-night!!
When it 'back-fires', it blows the varnish OUT of the pilot jet center hole. Just like, Carb Cleaner and an air hose.

The Pilot Jet resides High in the carburetor of the KLR, above the liquid fuel level apparently. The 'droplet' of fuel in the pilot jet dries OUT. Leaving a 'skin' acrosst it's tiny little HOLE!

Pure Gasoline, might evaporate completely, leaving an Open Pilot Jet!

Went and got me a new sealed battery tonight and made some observations.
after installing I could see some very bright spark way brighter. If I were to hold the starter button in it would turn and turn over like before .Only when I let off the button it would pop a very bright spark. So I tried just barely touching it and letting off and it would spark everytIme. Kinda like starting my old rd200 electric. It was an e-start two stroke an you just barely had to tickle the starter button and it'd fire right up. This still seems weird to me . This is my first klr but it is a four stroke and it seems it would start like any other four stroke. If I just barely push the starter in for a second and let off it starts almost everytime. If I hold the starter in waiting for it to crank like I would say a honda shadow or cb750 or what have you the plug isn't firing like I have normally seen. I am puzzled. Why is this?
