Repair vs Mod

So I crashed my 2012 KLR into a tree Saturday and walked away with only a few bruises. Basically the Cowlings, Cowling Bracket, Headlight, fender, handlebars, and gauge cluster all need to be replaced. I believe the quickest way to getting back on the road will be with some modification.

To solve all the plastics/cowling, windscreen, and headlight issue: Fork Mounted Replacement (Acerbis or Chinese knockoff)

Protaper ATV High bars

Trailtech Vapor Gauge Cluster

And maybe an IMS 10gal tank as the white fairings are gonna stick out a bit on the new one.

I may modify the fork cowling with a windscreen depending on how bad it is.

What are the odds all of the electronics will tuck up behind that small fairing as well?

I'm open to suggestions but getting back on the road for around $250 sounds pretty awesome versus putting it back to stock for around twice that.

front tire alignment?

I'm sorry to hear about the crash. I just went down on Friday on my 2013 KLR due to a death wobble. I have a few cosmetic parts to repair, but the biggest worry for me is that the front tire is very skewed, meaning it is not straight with the bars or fender. I was able to ride the bike home in that condition, so not sure if there is any permanent damage to hard parts or not.

I'm hoping it's just a matter of readjusting the triple trees, but was curious if you had to deal with any type of front end alignment after hitting the tree?

Thanks,
Tom

As best I can see, my forks, triple tree, and wheel are straight to each other. My front fairing mount limited my steering so I haven't ridden it more than about 15 feet since crashing. My bars are bent though so I know they need to be replaced.

I was trying to find some pictures of Ben Rainchilds KLR but couldn't google up any decent ones. He has on 08 that he's pretty well stripped of all the factory plastics other than the side covers and back fender. Looks great though, he has a 10 gal Safari tank on it and a big round headlight. I believe he runs a Vapor for instrumentation. It looks good! He rides the hell out of it as well... Snapped the frame in half on the TAT last year!

Found a pic! Looks great with the tank, but the big tanks are huge bucks for the gen 2's. At least, they are here in Canada.
Bens a cool guy, he's also the owner/craftsman behind Green Chile Adventure Gear.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. Yes, the 10gal tank is around $550USD so it will definitely have to be saved for. I also see the Brittannia Composites is about to come out with a Lynx fairing compatible with the KLR. I would love to turn this bike into and LD monster but I would also benefit from a seat and those three parts alone would put me around 30% of what the bike cost. Haha.

Get a motorcycle they said, it will be cheap transportation they said.

I'd definitely go the Mod route.....but either way, it's gonna be alot more than $250.00.

Try crashing a snow machine, sport bike or touring bike and you'll see that the cost of KLR repairs is relatively minor! ;-)

Cheers,
Dave

I'll add some more pics that show where everything is/went but overall I'm glad she's back. I bought the MRA handlebar windscreen mounts and am gonna remount the stock windscreen as the naked setup is more work than I want it to be.
