Never put anything but 87 in mine. I'm cheap and so is my KLR.

Unless you have installed a Wossner or other brand of Hi-Compression piston (10:1 +), a higher or lower octane fuel by its' self will not make it run better.

A different brand of fuel might help or a non-ethanol brand or grade of 87 or better might help.

+ 1. The relatively low compression ratio of a stock KLR engine cannot exploit the advantages of high-octane fuel, nor can the spark timing be advanced for that purpose.

Regardless, I fill up with "high test," just to show my KLR I care enough to send the very finest!

Running better

I put about 1/2 to 1 oz of StarTron in my KLR every other full tank.
Seems to start, idle, and run a little better. Then again, it could be wishful thinking. Can't hurt, and should keep the carb. clean.
I can get a season out of one bottle of the StarTron concentrate. My discount tool store sells it for just over $10.00

Tengai91,
In the USA our octane is measured by average of R+M/2.
Depending on altitude and temps in the Rocky Mountain states, it can be as low as 85, as high as 93.
All of our highway legal gasoline is Un-leaded.

But our biggest issue is Ethanol Added (up to 10%) , supposedly burns leaner/cleaner. But I'm certain it just supports the corn-farmers who support the politicians from the corn-belt states (They are pushing for 15%!).
The higher the percentage the quicker the Gasahol becomes stall/sour faster than pure gasoline. And the Octane Drops with it.

I agree. I have gassed my KLR from Deadhorse on the Arctic Ocean to Mexico City always using the cheapest lowest octane gas at the cheapest station and it has never tried to spit it out.
