One drop of oil when I set it on the stand

I went to look at a 2009 KLR 650 yesterday. It started right up after being in a garage all winter. I rode it just a bit to see how the clutch was working and then parked it back in the garage. A few seconds later after setting it on the side stand, one drop of oil appeared on the fresh garage floor. It was below the side where the transmission is, but not sure where it came from. He's asking a really fair price for it (it has 50k miles on it, but that does not really scare me - maybe it should) but is the oil drop a concern or easy fix?

One drop of oil. Could have been chain lube. Could have been from a freshly cleaned and re-oiled air filter. Could be from missing the aluminum gasket on the oil drain plug.

One needs to have a better look.

Thanks. Pretty sure it wasn't chain lube. It's not a deal breaker is it? I'm not a very mechanical person so I have to pay for every repair or fix I need. I'm trying to learn, but I'm over 50 and not sure if I'm to old to develop that mechanic's touch I seem to lack.

I've never seen a 2009 going for $2700 here in Michigan. People are getting $2500 for a pre-2008 model out here.

Oh, I re-read this and I actually think a Fair Price on a 2008 or 2009 would be about 3700-3800. That's what they seem to go for and it's not that far off from Kelly Blue Book price

The high miles would deter me somewhat unless I knew it didn't burn oil which for that year it most likely could especially with those miles. It would be great IF it had a 685 kit installed. The oil could be coming from the drive sprocket seal IF he had the chain too tight for any length of time. A semi easy fix if all it is, is the seal for a a shop etc......if it is coming from a engine gasket such as a side cover gasket an easy fix, but if from the centre gasket run away! If from the drain plug area it's either the seal on the drain plug or he has stripped out the drain plug threads and it's leaking from that, a semi easy enough fix but never great to have to have done. Look for a damaged drain plug to see if he has caught it on anything? How old is this guy? What does the rest of his belongings look like condition wise that is, does he seem to take care of his shit? IF not run away! With those miles and no regular maintenance it already worn out! BUT again, after saying all this, these bikes can be repaired quite inexpensively. But not the main engine cases, the centre ones with the split down the centre. I have a few empty cases in my garage now, they are going to the scrap man any time soon. The side covers are easy to get and deal with, the drain plug is either a heli coil installed or a larger drain plug fitted. I have been lucky, I haven't had one in yet but have seen plenty on the web because of meat fisted mechanic types adding far too much pressure to a simple oil sealing plug. OR they think the KLR is a dirt bike and start treating asone, jumping and riding over rocks etc which if they contact the drain plug will easily damage it and the case it sits in. So personally I would go back, with a few clean rags and see exactly where it's leaking from then start the negociations for a better price, but if at $2700 it's not bad already! IF it's an easy fix. Even the 685 kit or similar isnt a hard deal even for you to do. Simple hand tools and a few rented or borrowed is all you need and a guy to machine the cylinder. It's the perfect caveman stupid bike for people who want to try and fix things......it's so simple really it is! Maybe even take some good quality pics of the entire engine and post them up to show so maybe we can easily see where??? You never know it may be obvious to a skilled or trained monkey eye...lol
But at $2700 and in good running order I'd say grab it!

OH, and as soon as you install a 685 kit the mileage goees back to zero basically!

$310 US from Shnitz Racing, the boring up here from my guy is $110 and I charge the people who do not want to do the labour $250 You will need new side case gaskets around $20 each I think and some good RTV sealant to use on the base gasket, I refuse now to put them in dry, they have a nasty habit of weeping .....murphies law you know.

I only use some Three Bond #1184 or #1194 on both sides of the OEM base gasket at the 'center case seam' if there is a 'feelable' difference in level.

Other than that, 'clean and dry', from an Acetone wipe-down of the aluminum gasket surfaces, just like the factory usually does!
