Kill switch disengaging on side stand

The two prong kill switch on my '09 KLR is disengaging from the side stand. Not sure why this is happening all of a sudden. How do I adjust the side stand or the prong so that it stays engaged when the side stand is up or down?

2 wires going to the switch...cut then strip and join them together.

the side stand switch is now disabled...remember that when you ride away.

You can bypass it but if you ride off with the stand down, be aware that the chances you will crash are high.

I can see bypassing the clutch switch because the bike is going to lunge forward even if the clutch is pulled if it's sat a while.

I always thought it was better to repair than override safety devices. I would repair the wiring, replace the switch or both as needed.

Probably have to replace my side stand as there is too much play in it. In the meantime I've made wire harness to keep the switch attached to the side stand. Thanks for your responses everyone.

Extra switches and wires can be a stranding waiting to happen.

Not downplaying what brother Jack said one bit. Just two angles to see
the same thing from. Fix it tight and right, or disable. Our dads, granddads,
and me in the younger days ALL needed to kick up the stand before taking off.
If you automatically pop the stand up it's all good. I pull the clutch after righting
the bike level, kick up the stand, then toe first gear. Automatic and every time I
get on. Haven't pole-vaulted yet............... Still, I catch myself glancing down
before going into a hard left.

My KLR is the first bike I have owned with the kickstand/clutch switch.
I have decided to keep them intact, I already learned how to bypass and can do it on the road if the need arises.
Don't think I will replace if they fail, just leave bypassed.

To answer this original question I'll suggest that the 'jam-nut' has fallen OFF of the back side of the side stand. And the side stand pivot bolt has loosened up 'quite a bit' and spread the clevis apart. Now the "2 prong kill switch" no long is in-line with the stud that engages it.

If this is the case, I'll suggest that you remove side stand. Clamp it in a vise to narrow the clevis to original width, lube the pivot and Replace the missing jam-nut.

Even if you by-pass the safety switch, you probably need to lube and tighten your pivot bolt. It should be done during "Break-in Maintenance"!

Everyone needs to decide for themselves what is an acceptable level of risk. For ME, I HATE the sidestand and clutch safety switches and I've been riding since 1973 and my last KLR is bike #39....the vast majority of those 39 bikes haven't had any safety switches and I've never had a problem yet.

In fact, I can't sit on my KLR with the sidestand down as I get pushed to the right; ergo, I can't ride off with the sidestand down.

My whole goal with modifying my KLR's has been to improve functionality and improve reliability....bypassing those switches has certainly helped on the reliability side of things.

to each their own, but those parts are never going back on my bikes as long as I own them
