Bike runs fine but wont maintain highway speeds

Just picked up an 09 model off my brother for dirt cheap. Garage queen, only has 5,000 on it. She starts and idles just fine and runs around town and nothing feels wonkey but get going down the highway and it just feels like it's topped out at 65mph and won't go any faster. Also as I'm slowing down, if I clutch or shift to neutral, the rpms hover around 3,000 until I come to a stop and then drop to normal idle rpms. I have no idea where to start as I'm not too familiar with these things. Thanks in advance.

Carb. issue

With that low mileage, I'll put my bet on a gummed up carb.

When you get it running OK, use a gas stabilizer if you don't run it for a few weeks.

i agree with the previous post,

regarding top speed, he may have geared it down, that is changed the front pinion to 14 or 13 to get more torque but less top speed.

you should ask him.

I bought it from my brother who bought it brand new and I know he made absolutely zero modifications to it. This thing is immaculate and I scooped it up for under 3k with 5k miles on it so I can spend some money and still be in the green. I'm gonna do a carb rebuild to start with so should I go with an OEM kit or an upgraded kit? I plan on doing more highway than anything else with it.

saying and watching carb rebuilts makes it look easy.
i attempted to clean and rebuild an old 06 ninja, and i had lots of issues with the carb boots not sealing well, so they were leaking INTAKE AIR and causing bad idle.
i replaced the boots the clamps a million thing at the end i sold the bike .


this is just me, but i now would not mess with carbs, maybe take it a pro! >

or try those fuel cleaning additives first. that may clean up some needles.

So KLX needle and 142.5 and 145 jets were ordered. Even if that's not the issue, I've heard great things about doing them anyway.

Your most commonly plugged jet is the Pilot jet. Therefore your 3000 RPM issue. Someone has turned in the idle Speed Screw to force the carb to run on the mid-range needle.

It is Up-Inside the third tower inside the float bowl. Its tiny little orifice feeds the adjustable idle mixture screw just ahead and Outside of the float bowl and three or four more tiny little holes Under the bottom edge of the throttle butterfly plate.
When things are clean and properly adjusted only the first hole will be opened ahead of the throttle plate.

Thanks for that info. I have some reading to do to brush up on the theory of carburation. I'm going to be down for a bit any way so I'll check that pilot jet also and I went ahead and threw a 685 kit in my cart too. This is about to get fun.

Yes it will get fun and welcome to the forum and KLR's.

After the boogers get picked out it'll wheelie in first without the clutch.


The KLX modification makes the air/fuel nearly if not perfect for our bikes,
and this includes the 685 cc capacity.

Run a fine wire thru those tiny pilot jet holes and enjoy some real world torque!
The carb needs cleaned, not some build kit. Your parts are all still in new condition.
Possibly clean and oil the air filter to optimize all adjustments dialing it in.

These bikes aren't fast at all by motorcycle standards but will drag an elephant
up the side of a mountain. (Good times to be had between 4 and 6 thousand rpms!)

Thanks man! If I wanted fast, I'd have got another R6. I'm a whole different level of excited for this thing.

How fine of wire are we talking? I have access to .020, .032, and .040 piano or safety wire at work. I haven't starting ripping things apart yet so I don't know how small the holes are.

I'm planning a trip to hit the lower 48 in about two years so I figured I better start building now.
