Question Direction of Crank Rotation?

If I am looking through left side port what direction does crankshaft turn when engine is running? Counter- clockwise or clockwise?

Transmission in 5th gear, clutch out, roll bike while observing engine rotation? (Should rotate engine on either side of compression stroke, I'd think.)

Oh . . . assume no drive chain?

Seriously . . . my interpretation of Clymer . . . counterclockwise!

Correction and clarification welcomed.

That is okay, I called Stealership Service Dept. where my 2009 KLR originally purchased and they could not tell me either. (without looking it up and getting back to me...) I'll let you know if they call me back.

The crank spins the same direction as the tires.

Seriously, TallTex if you can't figure that out for yourself with the tips posted from above, I am afraid for your bike.

I strongly urge you to purchase a Clymer Service manual and read the entire pertinent section for whatever you are currently wishing to do, before you even turn the crankshaft in the appropriate direction with an appropriate sized socket!

Please read this link for your bikes own well being,

On the KLR650 that is correct, shiny. But not necessarily all motorcycle engines.

Examples KZ400/440, 454LTD, Vulcan500/Ninja500. Turn opposite of wheels or Clock-wise as viewed from the LEFT HAND side.

Here is a clue for TallTex and others on future engine work.
Look at which position the cam chain tensioner is on the block. The chain runs from the crankshaft, Up past the tensioner assembly to the cam or cams and Down the other side.
