cycling ticking noise

2016 KLR 650 with 980 miles.

I'm hearing a ticking like loose tappets, New to KLR, it may be normal I don't know.
At idle It goes "tick tick tick" quiet "tick tick tick quiet... repeatedly. Tick lasts for maybe 2-3 seconds at a time then quiet for about the same time. Seems mostly apparent once warmed or after I come to a stop like at a light or in traffic stopped.
It's not loud but it is noticable.
Fresh oil and filter has about 300 miles on it and oil level is near top of site glass.

Could this be chain tensioner needs adjusted, already? Or something else?

dan,
Most likely perfectly normal KLR650 noises.
The KLR650 and it's mechanics prefer to set the valve tappet clearances near or at maximum specs.
So that is .007-.008 inch for the Intake Valves, (min spec .004") & .009-.010 inch for the Exhaust Valves, (min spec .006").

This allows longer mileage between valve inspection and adjustments.

I will suggest that you remove the 2 plastic access screw caps on the LH engine cover and the rubber cap below that cover.
Using a 19mm socket turn the engine CCW til the 'lazy T' is in the timing window. Then loosen (1 turn) and re-snug the doo-hickey adjuster lock bolt. Re-install the rubber cap and plastic access caps.
Normal doo-hickey adjustment interval every 5000-6000 miles.
I have found a couple of the doo-hickey adjuster lock bolts Loose.

Check your engine oil every morning, before you start-up.
Ride safe.

Thanks pdwestman.

The adjuster lock bolt was tight, went ahead and made the adjustment and warmed it up. Still hear the ticking but going to live with it as a normal sound.
