Cylinder and piston replacement.

Im looking at my first klr, its 2008 with 6,000 miles. Previous owners say it ran low on oil and needs a new piston and cylinder, is that all that should be expected from low oil? How tough of a job is it? What would be a good price?

Running low on oil will wipe the cam bearings in the cylinder head long before any damage to the piston or cylinder. If doing the repairs yourself? It'll probably set you back around $500 at a minimum. Having the cylinder head machined for cam bearing inserts (which I've done to my KLR) will run about $450 when shipping costs are included. Add: gaskets, oil, antifreeze and any other bits and pieces and the total adds up pretty quickly. If you'll have someone else do it? It wouldn't surprise me at all if the total cleared $1,000.

If I get it I plan on doing it myself, Im just trying to figure out if its better to fix it up or wait out for one in running condition.

I'd pass unless it's $1,000 cheaper than you can buy a good runner in the same condition for. If you decide to do it, I'd send the head and cylinder to Eaglemike for refurbishment/exchange.
