Replacement brake/clutch levers

Has anyone tried any replacement levers for your KLR? I was looking at the $20 CNC levers on Ebay and I was wondering it any one has used them. I am looking for some additional adjustablity and I am cheap, or maybe frugal. :-) Do any other Kawasaki bikes use the same part? I just came to the KLR from a Suzuki V-Strom 650. I was looking for something lighter and settled on the KLR. I am doing more riding on dirt roads and the V-Strom was okay, but lighter is better.

Please give me you comments. the KLR I have has tons of options. Acerbis hand guards, tail box is a repurposed night vision box. Side boxes, brand not sure. Replacement windscreen with a Moose large screen. 5 spare tires, all knobbies 2 front, 3 rear. Acerbis Sueprmoto front fender, SW Motec side guards, heated grips.

About all that is left to do is ride it and maybe make some minor little mods like levers. I also just added Grip Puppies.

Thanks,
Lonnie

The only replacement that I've seen in that price range were for KLRs through 2007, Gen 2 were $60 or more a pair.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. I come from a long history of riding sport bikes so I am used to lot of front brake. The KLR seems a little weak to me. ;-) I saw somewhere that somebody swapped a caliper and master cylinder from SV650. Does that work on a Gen 2 or was that just on a Gen 1?

Any other options that I need to check out? Any other Kawasaki's use the same master cylinder and lever? This is my first Kawasaki.

Thanks, Lonnie

I have no idea about swapping calipers. You might message pdwestman or some of the other guys with more KLR experiance. I'm new to this KLR also. I had a new '84 but I've been riding street for the last 30 years.

On a Gen2, the typical brake upgrade is a 320mm rotor (I get mine from Eaglemike) and a ss line (also available from EM). No need to replace the MC IMO. On a Gen1 there is a big improvement going to the SV caliper (using an adaptor available from....you guessed it; Eaglemike), but on the Gen2 it's less noticeable thought the SV caliper IS superior with about 50% more pad area and a better shape that more closely matches the curve of the 320mm rotor. I don't think anyone currently makes a Gen2 SV adaptor but you can make one yourself if you like....let me know and I'll see if I can find the .pdf file.

Cheers,
Dave

As far as the original question goes, I've heard a couple of guys that have used these and were happy;

Dave,

Thanks for the reply. I have a Gen 2 and will probably try a different pad material first to get more initial pad bite. I am missing the lever adjustablity most and would like try some replacement levers. Are the ones you mentioned for a Gen 2? I have just seen them listed for the older KLRs.

Thanks again, still learning.

I know the brake lever is different Gen1 vs. Gen2. It seemed as though a member with a Gen2 tried them and they worked but I couldn't swear to it. If you PM me, I can link the discussion as it happened "elsewhere". Warp 9 makes a high quality adjustable lever for the Gen2 KLR but they're more money.
