Flames coming out of the engine

Hey

So whats happening is I'm seeing small blue flames coming out of the engine between the engine exhaust hole and the header pipe.

My header pipe is also loose and the header pipe gasket has burnt off. This has happened twice before. A mechanic has just put in a new gasket each time. Which works for about 5000km before it burns away again. Im sure it has something to do with the flames coming out.

How can I stop these flames? Ive recently jetted the carb (the problem was there before I did that) so I doubt its that. The bike has just hit 30000km, and the only thing I haven't done on time with the service manual is the valve clearances (suppose to be done at 24000km). Could it be that the valve clearances need adjusting?

Just so you know, this has been happening since about 15000km, and a mechanic has just been telling me to replace the gasket every time I start seeing it

Did it start right after the last time you had the valves adjusted? I suppose your mechanic has suggested doing them now? If not maybe talk to another mechanic.

Hi Kayla,

The flames are a result of poor seal between cylinder head and header pipe.
Nothing else.
Remedy: Replace gasket (aka packing), properly re-torque and check nuts for tightness frequently.
I Loctite pretty much every threaded fastener that goes on my KLR, but I haven't had to do these yet.

Does anybody recommend Loctite on the exhaust header nuts?

They need to be checked about three times after a new gasket is installed. They should be stable by then, but should be checked as a part of the oil change regimen or every 3K miles or so.

LocTite will do no good on these bolts; they get too hot.
