Speedo not working

I wanted to get a couple of opinions before I dig into this too far. Riding home from work yesterday my speedo and odometer abruptly quit working. I just had my bike in the shop on Saturday having them install new front and rear tires. I put about 200 miles on it between Saturday after I picked it up and yesterday afternoon. Is it possible the shop messed something up while taking the wheel off to change the tire? Would you guys start there? I don't want to accuse them of messing anything up but I also don't want to spend any $$ if the problem was caused by someone else.

Chances are they didn't get the speedo drive put together right. Take it back.

IN my case, it looked like maybe they forced it and bent the cable which eventually broke it. Was fairly simple to put another on for $15 so if it comes to that it isn't a biggie. Get a speedo app for your phone and use that in the meantime.

From my "Top New KLR Owner Mistakes to Avoid" list comes # - 3) Speedo drive: it is common for people to post problems with their speedo after they've had the front wheel off. If you don't make sure the drive slots in the hub are aligned with the speedo drive tangs you risk bending the drive tangs and worse, breaking the hub. Time consuming to repair, expensive to replace, easy to avoid!

...and of course, check both ends of the cable.

You may be expecting to be able to take your bike to the shop and have tires installed with no issues. Fact is, you are better off to do it yourself. Tire are not that hard to change. KLR's are easy to work on. If you want all the bolts tight, "do it yourself and save".

Thanks for the advice everyone, I'll take it back to the shop and try and get everything squared away.

I've owned 5 bikes and I can't ever remember any shops :-) That's above my pay grade I think!

First most likely cause (like it says above) is they installed the front wheel incorrectly and broke the speedo drive in the hub. Maybe you get a whole brand new front wheel out of it!

Second cause (happened to me) is the speedo drive cable unscrewed itself at the back of the speedo and fell off. You can take the windshield off and check that.
