Tire comparison question

My Gen 2 currently has Dunlop D606 both front & rear. I am contemplating replacing the front with a Pirrelli MT21 as this appears to be a popular combination.
My question is how does the on bitumen performance particularly on wet roads compare?

I've run several of both. I find the MT21 to be much quieter and longer lasting on pavement.......grip seems to be similar and I ride my KLR's in a "spirited" manner, on and off road. ....I should clarify that by "longer lasting", I mean I run the MT21 longer......I tend to toss the D606 front earlier due to the extreme "braking pattern wear" that it suffers from. All knobs will get that wear but it's worse on a D606 than any other tire I've run. Once that wear starts to set in, pavement performance suffers and I toss 'em. Not sure which one would last longer if you rode them to the cords.....I don't do that.

2 cents,
Dave

Thanks Dave, that is exactly the sort of feedback I was after. Even if it is only slightly quieter on pavement that will be a big plus.
I must admit that after only having bikes with road tires previously I do find the wear pattern on the front D606 a little unsettling.

I actually LOVE the D606 rear MT21 combo. I've run MT21's front and back and wasn't impressed....mostly with the lack of traction. I switched to the D606 set for a few sets and offroad traction was better on the rear but the front wasn't great on the pavement due to the factors mentioned previously. Some guys on another site recommended the D606/MT21 combo and sure enough it seems to have hit a sweet spot. I have two identical KLR's and was able to try the MT21 front vs the D606 front and compare them with my son swapping back and forth; we both preferred the MT21 front on pavement....offroad the difference was too hard to call though they seemed close. Different conditions may have favored one or the other.

That said, my usage is "offroad centric" and my weekend jaunts only have enough pavement to connect the dirt bits....but I also commute on my KLR's in the summer. My commute is only 3.4 miles though, so longevity isn't a big concern and I get a year out of a set of tires. I have to say I've been very pleased with the pavement grip as well.

If I was going to ride a bunch more pavement and less single track, I'd like to try the Mitas E07.

Cheers,
Dave
