Engine Knocking

Spent some time looking for this before I posted. But...

I have a 2017 KLR650, 2,000 miles. Recent oil change, put in 5-30w oil and check level frequently.

I was driving to base today and as I pulled up to the gate shack, I noticed a definite "knocking" from my engine. I limped up to my work building and then had a tow truck come out and pick it up. Put octane boost in tank, mixed it up, but tow truck driver, who is an avid biker, said problem didn't sound like low octane gas, but some sort of physical issue with engine.

I do not over-rev, hop on it, or anything like that. I am a reserved driver. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Mark,

Did it run fine? Why the limp? Other than a noise (on a KLR, hahahahaha), what's up?

It revs and has power, but the knocking noise is not normal.

Curious about the 5-30 oil you put in. Was this an automotive oil? I haven’t seen much 5-30 going into motorcycles but then I’m not shopping for it either.

The 5-30 w is what was recommended in KLR650 service manual.

What brand and type of oil did you use? Is it motorcycle specific oil? I’ve never seen 5W-30 recommended in any manual I have.

Ok, so after your initial post, it raised the question of what's the difference between vehicle oil and motorcycle oil. So I went and checked. And sure enough there is a difference. I didn't know. I put regular vehicle oil in the KLR. It has been running about 2 weeks that way.

Oh, no. You'd better have it crated up and sent to Lander, WY. Just send it to "General Delivery, Them Motorcycle Guys". There it will be evaluated, at altitude and by experts, for several years. If it works OK it will be returned to you when you come and get it.

Seriously, probably no harm done. I'd get that oil out of there and put in a heavier oil. 10W-40 should be good for anything in the PNW. Hey, the way I look at it is if it is too cold for 10W-40 it is too damn cold to ride unless it got that cold while you were riding, in which case you'll probably want to stop.

I have been having good luck with Kawasaki oil, though I was previously a Rotella devotee. The Kawasaki oil is turning in better oil analyses and isn't horribly and depressingly expensive.

If it wasn't knocking prior to the oil change that's where I would start. As Tom says Kawasaki 10W-40 or Shell Rotella 15-40 are a couple options.
