Ignition key blank

Good day all,

I conducted a search on this forum but cant find what I'm looking for. About a year ago someone posted information on what aftermarket "Key Blanks" can be used instead of the more expensive OEM keys. could anyone repost this information?

Thank you..

There are two different keys, one zigs where the other zags. A suitable blank will be an ILCO KW14R or ILCO KW14.

Any good locksmith's shop will have these blanks or other-branded equivalents and the locksmith can find you the right blank from your key. They will probably be ~$2.

Best to stop by the locksmith with your KLR. I find that some of their blanks are just a tad too thick and need a little extra work to go in smoothly in all locks.

After two unsuccessful attempts by our local hardware store to match my KLR key, I recalled that I'd had a Kawasaki key made at the bicycle and locksmith a few years ago. He has a motorcycle key board with keys for just about every bike made, except my BMW. The KLR key is common to many other Kawasaki models, like the Vulcan Nomad. You can also order a blank on ebay for about $5 delivered. I bought one for my BMW and the shop cut a new key for me.

Hi. Just wondering how much your local dealer wanted for a key. I walked into my local dealer for an extra key (I bought the KLR used & only got 1 key) and it cost me $6. total. That was an ilco blank ground to match.

That's about what I paid at our local locksmith shop.
