Doo Hickey tool loan and Hampton Roads area riders?

Good morning from Eastern Virginia. I purchased a 2008 KLR a couple of years back (garage queen with under 500 miles on the clock when I got her). I'm getting ready to dig into her now that I've got some miles on the motor and want to do the Doo whil I've got her undressed. Is anyone willing to loan or sell their tools? I can pay for shipping or throw a check to reimburse the sender when I return the tools...whatever works.

Also, off topic, if there is anyone in the Hampton Roads area, I'm looking for people to ride with that know the area. I'd like to build some off road skills (I'm new adventure motorcycling although I've been riding for decades) but I don't have any idea where I can ride around here. Figure finding a riding buddy who knows the area is better than dealing with cops for trespassing.

Thanks,
Jeff

Thanks SRE. I decided to just bite the bullet and get the tools. After I'm done I'll just add them to the list of tools I'll never use again or list them for sale at a reasonable price. Looking at the cost of the tools, it was only a couple dollars more than round trip priority shipping to buy the tools. Didn't make sense to ship them. Such is the life of a motorcycle owner I guess. Did the same thing with a synchronizer for the Concours throttle bodies. Installed vacuum lines while I did the valve job and then purchased a synchronizer and 90 deg screwdriver from Carbtune in England. Wouldn't you know it though...I connect the synchronizer, warm up the bike, and all the throttle bodies are balanced... Oh well.

I use an electric engraver to write "EM Doo & T Spring DONE" on the beveled area above the doo locking bolt, when done.

You might consider going back to the oiled foam air filter & frame, rather than the K&N. The steel end cap actually reduces air flow & the small overall size tends to clog quicker than oiled foam. Some say the K&N also passes slightly larger fine particulates than properly oiled foam.

Are you aware of the 'Deep Hole' in the lower starter reduction gear bushing in the outer cover? EM supplies the proper spacer when Doo is ordered for 08-09 models.

And Welcome to the Forum. :)

I purchased a Uni filter to replace the stock and didn’t figure out that it had the K&N until I opened the air box the first time. The Uni is still sitting in a ziplock bag freshly oiled waiting for me to get around to buying the plastic frame, which was not with the bike when I bought it.

As for the deep hole problem, I ordered the doohickey from Mike’s and requested the spacer in the comments. I see my order shipped so hopefully it will have the spacer too. Time will tell.

Thanks for the welcome... I’ve been lurking for a couple of years but not active. As a project, the KLR gave way to shinier things. I’m thinking about taking off for a week this summer to ride and was planning to take the KLR so I figured I may as well get started now by doing the things I know need to be done.

Hi Jeff. I’m Jeff 😎. Do you tent camp? If not it might be in your future. LOL. I live in Camden and one of the guys I ride with is in Chesapeake. I too found a lightly used KLR earlier this year and we do the trails rides on some weekends. Trouble is, sometimes the other guys don’t have off road capabilities. But we could just leave them on the blacktop. I don’t know many places but the afore mentioned friend seeks them out and we have a blast. It’s mostly Gamelands and fire/gravel roads but you’re welcome to come out and see if it’s your thing. Alligator river is a great place west of Manteo as are the Gamelands SW of Suffolk. And there are some dirt roads east of the dismal swamp That we’ve been looking for too. There’s also a website that lists dirt roads with some trails in eastern NC. My buddy has the link. I’ll check with him and post it here. Let me know if you’re up for some riding and some Irish American coffee. Makes the stops that much better 😊
