Bike Falls Over Then Runs Rough

Just as a lesson to all I submit the following:

My riding partner (08 KLR - blue) had his bike fall over in my driveway and it would not start when we got it back up. Drained the battery and had to bump start it at which time it would not idle and ran very rough with lots of backfiring (though I was in Iraq).

Fuel Issue? Tapped carb thinking it was a stuck float - no. Drained bowl - no luck.

Electrical? Changed plug - no, jiggled wiring harness - intermitant spark - now we are getting somewhere!

Check wiring - found a partially severed ground wire that runs under the tank (yellow and black one that goes into the top of the lower engine). Does anyone know where this goes and what it does?

Wire repaired = bike running perfectly!

I drive the green one, here is the picture of the sad owner of the blue one while we worked on the wiring. What, you can't believe that a blue one fell over??? I won't get into the fact that he gets off on the wrong side of the bike (high side) hence the accident. (He can't help it, he's from Newfoundland).

Just wanted to put it out there in case someone else runs into this.

Cheers!

I shimmy off the high side cause I can't get my leg over the trunk. The embarassing part is it is habit now and I do the same thing on my 73 CB450. Doesn't look very "cool".

Put your kickstand down and stand on that peg, I do that getting on too. Don't like dragging my boot over the seat.

Wait, I'm tripping. I don't get off the high side. I'm with you, Spec. Step on the peg and well, still not real gracelful. And still looks stupid swingin your leg three feet over the seat of a 450.

Apparently my visualization skills are weak.

You guys are funny!

(I do it too having a large-ish toolbox/ trunk mounted out back.)

Kinda strange "marching" onto a scooter but one gets used to it.
After it's habit, we don't give it a second thought even high-swinging
way over the flat seat on a Honda streetbike. lol

Lol!! Truer words have never been spoken... I have developed a unique swing of the leg/bent knee thing to get on mine with the trunk on. For a really interesting time, try getting on with a passenger already on the bike... Usually the passenger would get on last, but I help my son up on the passenger seat and then climb on myself, easy winner for Funniest Home Videos!

Cheers,
Stew

That should totally be right under the forum name. Too funny. And so true.
