Band saw sound from left side of engine above 75mph

Before I get to catching up I just remembered I need some help. Time wise I had no choice but to hit the super slab home and kept a pace of 70 to 75mph indicated most of the way. After about 120miles I was getting antsy and just wanted to be home so I thought I would see how fast my baby could really get up to but as I was getting over 80 I noticed a metal grinding sound, like a soft band saw hitting metal, coming from my engine. I leaned in and listened as I speed up and slowed down finding it coming from the left side and starting about 80mph or 5500rpm and stopping as soon as I slipped under the 80 mark. Oh so close to home I didn't take time to see if 5500rpm in 4th or 3rd would produce the sound or not. Power wise I felt no difference and I am sure I could have made 100mph if I didn't notice the sound.

Is this normal at those speeds (my first time getting her that fast)? Could I have done something wrong when doing my Doo?

I'm wondering if it's RPM related, rather than speed.. What I'm getting at is that I see you have engine guards. At certain RPM's people have mentioned a pretty nasty buzz from them vibrating..

I'll call it a hunch..

Hmmm I didn't even think of that. I will check all the bolts then I will have to find a not so busy road to play on. Hopefully I will have time today. If that is the problem then I will be very happy it is not in the engine and it is not loud enough to even think about ever again (not like I will be running those speeds enough either).

So after being out of the country and taking a week to get everything finished I finally got my baby out and have some fun. For the record bump starting a KLR is a pain in the arse!

Anyways, this sound happens at a little under 5500 rpm and is scary! I will try to do a video tomorrow. It happens in all gears even neutral. This is for sure coming out of the engine and I am wondering if it is safe to even ride when I am not hearing it under the 5500 mark?

I guess I will save my mumbling fears till after I get a video up. I am hoping it is all in my head and this is normal KLR happings. Sigh

I'm not a doctor, but I do stay in Holiday Inn Expresses on a regular basis..

Your Doohickey Spring isn't doing anything and you need to replace it so your counter balancer tensioner does it's job before you continue use the chain it operates to saw away at the inside of your engine.

Order the parts from Eagle Mike. He's just a few hours south of you. http://www.eagle-m-e.com/

Give him a call.. He's a fantastic guy that's very helpful over the phone.

I'll second that. Got my doo and torsion spring from Mike.

I did to the doo with torsion from Mike. Everything went smoothly but being I am no mechanic I was freaked I screwed up and I focused on that...

So I went to make the video and by golly I found the problem! Right in between 5500 and about 5700 not less and not more it seems to be the right vibs from the engine to turn the left foot peg added to my crash bars into a tuning bar. My neighbor came over thinking I should not be cutting into my bike and we had a good laugh trying to make it stop.

Sorry I freaked out on you guys! I promises to not panic next and try to not be so focused on my fears so I see everything going on.

If there is one thing about motorcycles that is universal... the damn origin of the sound is never where you hear it coming from. Since in most cases you have to be riding to hear it, wind and all the little crevices does crazy things to sound waves.

HAHAHA So true! Just all the crazy sounds of the road and other vehicles adding to the confusion does not help either. At lest it is fun to learn as I go.

Yep I've gotta buzz right around 4k that I gotta find because it is really annoying. They can be a PIA to find sometimes.
