KLR Noob with some questions.

Thinking of getting a couple of dirt bikes for my 14 year old son and myself. I'd get him a Yamaha TTR230 (his first bike), and myself a 2008 KLR650. I've seen two such bikes at a local dealer. I already own a 2010 HD Street Glide.

Question is when he turns 15 and takes the classes he could get his M endorsement on his license and ride the KLR to school. What exactly would I need to turn a KLR from dirt to street, other than tires? Is there a special kit sold to make this switch? If so, how much does it cost?

The KLR 650 is a street bike out of the box. You could strip some stuff off to make it more dirtable but it will still be a KLR = not a dirt bike.

Unsolicited advice:

Don't buy a 2008 or a 2009. There's too much risk of it being an oil burner*.

Buy a 2007 or earlier, or buy a 2011 or later.

I'm on the fence about the 2010.

*They all burn oil a bit if you wring them up over 5000rpm. An oil burner will use oil all the time at any rpm.
