Its probably the voltage regulator/rectifier at fault but could also be corroded connector plugs, if you can get the engine running test the voltage at the battery should be 13.5v ish , above 14.5v reg/rec at fault, check all the earth points too, I have a 1988 600 and found a few corroded plug pins. hope this helps and good luck !
