Potential owner of 2012 KLR650

hi guys,
I am living up here in Mount Isa and want to buy a good bike to see some of the outback. The KLR is great value, but what are the pluses and what are the trouble spots with owning one? what should i consider to mod straight out of the box, and what could wait? Even more attractive at the moment with giveaways for storage bags, top bag, large screen, and some other gear at the moment.

Welcome! If you plan on getting off the asphalt and hitting the trails, a good pair of off road amour is a good Investment. There are a few different ones you can get. I have the happy trails guards on mine with the skid plate and hiway/ Engin guard. Plus I put some on the back over the side covers but if you are getting panniers then they will work well. There is tons of info on this site plus opinions on different types of guards. There are so many mods to do to this bike. Hard to really say where to start. It's a never ending story.

Free stuff is always good.

Get some crash bars as this bike is heavy and if you do over balance then it is probably going down. New plastic is expensive and SW Motech bars are about the price of 1 side cover. A metal sump guard is also a good idea as the plastic one comes up short of actually protecting the drain plug.

Sort the suspension to suit your weight, stock springs are way too soft for anyone over 70kg. I got mine through Suspension Matters, but there should be other suspension shops that can help. The forks can do with a re-valve. Gold emulators are popular, but I got Ricor 'Intiminators' that change the action of the forks but just need an oil change rather than disassemble and modification. The rear can be revalved and a new spring fitted for around $300 or for about double that aftermarket shocks are available.

From there, wear out the stock tyres (about 3500km) and fit some Dunlop 606 knobbies and it will be much happier and take you just about anywhere.

There is that option, but I'd armor up.

Mt Isa is a long way from anywhere if you break it while exploring.

I picked up a 2012 about 2 weeks ago, threw a set of Happy trails crash bars and skid plate on, rear KLR saddle bags, and an FMF Q4 slip on and rejet, love the bike, it doesnt do any one thing great, But it does alot of things really well, dont regret the purchase of the bike or any of the upgrades at all.

wow, thanks for all of the advice, still thinking.....and working on the wife..lol.
have to factor in a bit of cash for startup gear as mentioned.

If you budget a bit over a grand for your gear and then sort the bike as you go, it doesn't seam like as much money.

Get good riding gear, not MX nylon stuff as it is OK at low speed, but not much chop in a slide. Get the best stuff you can afford as it does last longer. I got some good cold/wet weather pants 13 years ago and they are still going strong. I have also bought stuff that was 1/2 the price but only lasted a couple of years.

Helmets look expensive, but if you break it down to a $/day figure, they it doesn't seem as bad.... they are still bloody expensive though!

I've found that regular and dramatic increases in my life insurance coverage go a long way in my wife not giving me crap about riding, especially home from work at night in the dark. On the down side, it seems to have the opposite effect when I propose buying new safety gear...........
