New rider looking for gear

I'm going to purchase an 08 KLR650 by the end of May, last time I rode a bike was a KX125 about 15 years ago when I was a teenager. I'm going to need all the gear, like helmet, jacket and gloves for both cool and warm weather. I really don't even know were to start, any help would be nice. I should say I'm a large guy, 6'2" about 290lbs.

Thanks, Mark

Gear for the LARGE rider

Mark,

Welcome back to scooter riding. i just re-started my riding again last year here in Texas. Rode through your part of the country last fall.

I am same size as yourself. I have found that a good textile jacket with liners has been adequate for temps down to 40 F. I am wearing a Cortech mesh jacket in XXXL from MotoLiberty (they carry a lot of bigger sizes as does Newenough.com). My son is using Olympia gear-Mesh Jacket and gloves.

I have some Olympia gloves for cooler weather/waterproof. Summer I have some Lee Park deerskin which like a lot. Very comfortable.

Helmet - what ever fits. I have a $85 Zuess flip up that is a good helmet. A Nolan that I use on longer rides. The Nolan is higher quality and has a sun shade- Zeuss is a little "loose" on the visor and latch after a year. These fit my head pretty well and are comfortable for a long day on the road. I wore the Nolan around the store for an hour to insure it fit. Get funny looks but have tried buying helmets over the net and the fit was not good on several and I had to send them back. BTW - Motoliberty has been very good about returns of equipment that did not fit.

I have large calfs that make the taller boots impossible to fully close on top - have gone with shorter boots from Joe Rocket and found them very comfortable for riding as wel as walking around.

I wear Diamond Gusset Kevlar jeans in summer with leather chaps in winter - works for me.

Hope you have a great time on the scooter.

Please check out www.newenough.com for gear.. I have nothing to do with the company, other than being a repeat customer..
The prices are great (even moreso on the closeout stuff), and the customer service is second to none!!!

I've also had very good service from http://www.motorcyclecloseouts.com/, http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/, and http://www.bikebandit.com/

Check them out, too!!

Buying gear.

One more thing--it's usually worthwhile to spring the extra dough for the good stuff. I get some guff from friends such as "You're STILL wearing that old black jacket? You bought that back in the '80s, right?" I say, "Yeah. How many have you gone through since then?"
I believe in the old adage: "The stench of low quality lingers long after the sweet smell of low price has faded."

Listen to Paper...

I get pretty much all my gear through newenough. I'm not affiliated with them either, but they are good people, have great deals, and don't hassle you about returns. A lot of stuff you can try on in a store and then order, but I have also gone by their size guidelines and it has always been right. I'm 6'2", 200 lbs.

They also do a little review of every product which really helps.

I have gotten several pairs of gloves, a couple helmets, armored riding gear, jackets, raingear, etc from them. For me, when I need something new, I pretty much start and end my search there. If you aren't too picky about style you can score some crazy good bargains.

Hummm , gear well as for a jacket i couldn't say enough good things about Scorpion , i'm a noob to bikes and so i figured that i'd better get all the gear first before buying the bike and so the jacket was the first thing on my list , it is of top quality and fit is spot on , got it from
http://stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Detail.bok?no=2456

and the best part about this place is that there is a video review of just about any specific item , i've also got a Knox Back protector too

Excellent place to buy stuff , and don't forget to check out the year end sale event as there are some good deals to be had.
