Bag clearance question

Must had Nelson rigg survivor series bags and dirt works supports put on, I rode about a half hr, when I got to my gf's all my stuff inside the bag next to the pipe were really hot, the bag was hot but it didn't smell like it was melting and I don't see any burns, here's a pic of the clearance between the two.

The next time you ride for 15 or 20 minutes stick you hand between the bag and the muffler. Don't actually stick it all the way in there or you will lose some meat.

I use bags without a rack and before I insulated the outside of the muffler an inner tube melted inside the bag.

Always good to leave a couple of inches clearance on the dry bags as there is no heat protection.

My softbag on that side got "warm" not "hot". Nice to get out a warm jacket. Never had a melting problem. You could add insulation. Go ask the guys at the parts store. There's header wrap that the hot rod guys use.

I used some 1/2" thick insulation used for fire proofing on the back of 2'x2' lay-in ceiling tiles in office buildings. Any commercial air conditioning contractor should have some lying around.

I put the insulation on the outward facing side of the muffler only and for durability covered it with a sheet metal pipe saddle held in place with stainless steel hose clamps from Lowes. I also ran a length of 1/2" iron pipe along the outside of the saddle to hold the plastic out and allow ventilating air to pass by.

The reason for covering only the outward facing side is the small amount of clearance between the muffler and the tire - especially with knobby tires. A full wrap could get torn up at full suspension compression. I found out the hard way.
