Skid plates and roll bars

All:

I have a 2009 KLR 650 purchased with 3200 miles. It is in great shape. The previous owner only drove on road. I would like a skid plate and roll bars to protect the engine, radiator, fairings etc. What would you guys recommend? Best protection and ease of installment are important.

Can't help you with Gen2 crash bars but the JNS skidplate seems to the the top of the heap... I have two Ricochet skidplates that I like too.

Cheers,
Dave

Simo, let me know if you have any questions about the JNS plate.

I have a happy trails on the way to replace the OEM skid plate. I have the dirt racks crash bars and like them just fine. I have a tendency to dump the bike a lot so these are a MUST for me.

Not sure about the ricochet but the happy trails touts an access port for the doohickey.

I have the JNS skid plate and the older style SW-Motech engine guards on my 2013. Both have served me well, including a low side at 60 mph. I've been impressed with how well the engine guards have worked.

I have the Ricochet skid on mine with 1st gen SWMotec crashbars which have worked well. I chose the Ricochet skid plate because it goes all the way back to the rear of the engine where some don't. There is room to access the the Doohicky adj bolt as well. I thought Ricochet plate was better than the SWMotec plate because it is fully welded at the seams rather than riveted like on the Motec offering. I saw one of the Motec ones split after hitting a log.
Regards....justjeff

ps.....I see the new SWMotec offering looks like a much better offering than the one available in 2011....pricey though!!

SW Bars

SW Motech bars here too. 2011 KLR.
One low speed lay down on pavement. Minor scrape of paint. No bending, except for my highway peg. ( It was mounted directly to the SW Motech bar's tab.) I bent it back in shape with vice grip.
Black touch up paint, and you never know it went down.

1 Vote here for SW Motech.

Another vote for SW Motech, I have dumped the bike 3 or 4 times since installation with NO damage.

An IMS plastic tank substitutes for crash bars, protecting radiator.

(As GEICO might say, "Everybody knows that!")
