Need cool gear for warm weather

Hi folks -

My riding gear is all black and I'm loving it right now. It has zip-in insulated lining as well as zip-in water-proof lining. Verrry nice. It's good to about 40F at 70 mph.

I was absolutely hating it all last summer and into November. I live in SoCal and ride mostly in the desert. Black is the wrong color when ambient temperatures are hovering at ~100F.

What I'm looking for is a recommendation for a warm weather jacket and pants combo that will zip together, has CE armor at the joints and up the spine, preferably in a light collor like white or silver, that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

I need to be able to comfortably ATGATT, in 85F-100F temps at 10 mph.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Tom

hot weather gear

sounds like your not in bad shape except for the black color. There are plenty of choices, just depends on your budget. Here are a few sites that I have had good experiences with lately:

www.motorcycle-superstore.com
www.newenough.com
www.motodirect.com

Also, here is an interesting product I saw lately that might be of interest to you: http://www.techniche-intl.com/conten...category/5/27/

I dont have any experience with it and dont know where you could purchase it. But if you call the manufacturer I am sure they can get you taken care of.

biker4life2001 -

Thanks for that info.

I think I just had one of those "Doh!" moments. I just realized I should be looking at "mesh" type stuff. I wasn't clear on what "mesh" was...

I'm considering something like this:

Tom,
One thing I found with the pre 08' KLR's is that there's a lot of heat that comes off the engine/radiator on the lower left side while riding. Enough to make life very uncomfortable and actually cause burns to your leg.

I have a set of mesh pants and I can't ride the KLR with them for very long. This is when I use a pair of tank panniers, I should add.. Can't vouch for riding without them, since I never take the panniers off..

Anyway, a few years ago I and Double A rode our KLR's to Lima, OH for the National BMW rally, leaving the BMW's at home, just to be different.. Anyway, I knew the weather was going to be hot and dry, so I wore my mesh pants. By the time I got halfway there, I had to ride with my left leg sticking out on the end of the peg. I actually got 1rst degree burns out of this, peeling the next day..

I ride my KLR with non-mesh pants from now on, saving the mesh pants for riding the other bikes.

The tank panniers may have something to do with this, as the bike actually runs cooler with them on. I think they may force more air through the radiator, but they also block air to my upper legs. The burn occurred below the panniers, and again, only on the left leg (same side as the radiator)..

Just something to think about..

Thanks for that - I hadn't thought about the amount of hot air that comes out an onto the legs.

Hmmmm, that makes riding naked not an option anymore...

I may be back to the drawing board.

Actually, it's "leg".. The right leg's in pretty cool air all the time..

I ride in pretty hot weather with Aerostich Darien pants.. Excellent protection, and you can zip up or down areas for a bit of venting..

Tom...just my opinion, but the stuff on your link from olympiamotosports.com looks like something sonny crockett wore on Miami Vice in 1985. If that's the look you're going for, rock on. You are in SoCal, so maybe you can pull it off.

What's wrong with Sonny? He's a pretty sharp dresser, if ya ask me.

Sheesh, next you'll be talking smack about Sha-Na-Na!

Tell ya what. July 4th let's meet up in Blythe and go for a run down Wiley's Well Road to Milpitas Wash Road on down to Yuma. Daytime temps ought to be right around 90 or so, so it ain't got hot yet, that comes in August...

Neither of us will care what we look like by the time we get 10 miles down the road, I guarantee.

Isn't "stylishly dressed KLR rider" a contradiction in terms?

My wife wants me to get the Miami Vice gear. The shorts are awesome. Not so in keeping with ATGATT, but snazzy.l
