Question Mitas E-07 vs. Shinko 700

Well it's time for new shoes. Coming off are Kenda 270's (got 7,000 miles out of the front and 5,000 out of the rear) and I'm deciding between the Mitas E-07 and the Shinko 700. If I'm realistic my riding is 65% road and 35% forest and jeep roads while occasionally pushing my limits on rutted or real rocky stuff, but I want the performance and confidence off road. Primary uses are semi regular commuting and then taking the roads into the mountains to get on the trails. The Kenda 270 rear was fine off road but wore flat in what I think was a short time from the tarmac. The 270 front I did not like at all . I found it squirrelly on road grooves, gravel, dirt, etc.

So, after reading comments here in the forums and reviews from various retailer sites I've come to the E-07 and the 700's. My priorities in descending order are:

1- Performance on tarmac and trail (no mud)
2- Confidence inspiring performance of front tire
3- Tread life
4- Price (I realize that I can get a F and R of 700's for the cost of one F E-07)

Tires discussions seem to bring out some strong opinions and I look forward to hearing them. Thanks in advance for any and all input!

Firstly I will say that I have not tried either the Mitas or the Shinko tire. There's no doubt that the Mitas is a fine tire but for me the performance versus price issue is too big. At near twice the price of the Shinko does the Mitas have twice the performance. I have my doubts. If cost isn't an issue then the Mitas would probably be the tire of choice.

Watching thread to see which direction it goes. I'm kinda looking at the Shinko 700's as my next replacement tires after I wear out my current stock. Too many tires and not enough time to ride.

My milage

On front, I have a nearly worn out Midas E-07 with 18,604 mostly black top & some gravel road use. Will put a Heidenau K60 on this winter.
On back is a Heidenau K60 with 9,326 miles on it... same type of use as front. It still looks almost new, and does quite well on gravel, dirt, and grass. ( I don't like mud, or water crossings so, Limited use there. ) The few times it went through mud, or water, it did OK.

You?ve certainly gotten good tread life from the Mitas and Heidi! Guess I?m having difficulty accepting the tread pattern of the Heidi rear tire but your experience and that of others point to it being a good trail tire for these heavier bikes. And it?s probably a smooth ride on pavement.

I do experience some mild vib's at higher speeds. Not enough to bother me, but not everybody has same sensitivity to vib's.
When I had a Mitas on rear, there was a howling at 50 mph or so. That was quite noticeable, especially while wearing different ear plugs. Strange affect! I changed my ear plugs to a different type, and the sound went away completely.
The KLR isn't a quiet bike, by any stretch of the imagination. Ear plugs are your friend!

I'm pretty enamored with Shinko tires. Been running them on all three of my bikes for several years. I've run Ravens and Verges on my big tourer, 804/805s and 705s on my KLR, and 244s on my DRZ400. I do all my own mounting and balancing. I have been 100% satisfied with Shinkos, and now always look first to that brand as my tire of choice for any bike I have.
