I am looking for a seat that doesn't thrust me forward and you know, make me a woman. I was going to go with seat concepts commuter but then a review says that it still send you forward and doesn't sit you flat or back a bit. I cut a giant flat spot in the stock seat cushion because it was so bad.
I would rather not have to build my own seat.
Any suggestions?
I sold my 1995 Harley Sportster 1200 last night....end of an era.
I took my seat to an auto upholstery shop. I had them trim about 2" off the back, tapering to 0" about half way to the front. Made the seat much flatter, and no more scooting forward.
My wife made a cover for some foam seat padding, and I strapped it on top. Way more comfortable now.
Here's a link to my KLR page. Scroll down about 4 images to the section on the seat mod. 2011 KLR650
I bought a 20"x15" nylon cutting board at Walmart. Left it 15" at the rear and tapered to stock at the front without the dip in the stock base pan. Bolted it to the stock base pan with 2" of foam cushion and some vinyl covering from a fabric ship.
On the highway I sit back on the wide part and on dirt I move up to the narrower part. No dip in the middle to push me forward.
I can always remove the board and foam and drop the stock foam and cover back on.
My Seat Concepts Commuter has stood me well on two longer trips, 8,000 miles last year to Inuvik, 3,000 Baja miles in February and March this year. No "tranny tuck" here.
I have been loving my Sargent World Sport Adventure Touring Seat. I am not tall at 5'10" with a 30" inseam. So, I purchased the lower profile version of the seat. Both variants have the same shape/contour though. So, I would imagine the tall or regular profile Sargent seat would just be a slightly softer version. It made a HUGE difference for me both in terms of comfort on longer rides and in terms of control when off road.
I picked mine up from Revzilla, but I can't link here...
I purchased a seat off eBay. It was cheap. I wanted the seat pan to make my own. I used that foam from Ollie's- good stuff cheap! Its for garage floors in front of your bench. I figured it hold a person all day and takes a beating. 3m sorry adhesive and a 60 grit grinding wheel will shape any foam you have. I have so much of that foam. If I screwed to. No big deal. Just start over. Total invested. 120.00, tested it before final stapling. I did have to make changes. And I still want to make more. But as it rides now. I can do a 300 mile day no problems. My BALLS don't go numb anymore. My next change, I will be adding 8lb memory foam. Its thick but pulls down nice when wrapped. It also holds it shape well.
Here are some p
icks of my seat as it now.

It would have been cheaper for me to go that way. Because I am stubborn and into this far. I have to make it great. Its really good now, but not great. Like everyone else, my bike slopes to the forward. The new rear shock doest sag anymore. So now the seat needs some adjustments. Not sure what to do really.
I am also height challenged. Are your feet closer to the ground now? Did you change the (what I call dog bones) bars under the shock to lower it as well? How low did it go?
Barn find, It did get my feet closer to the ground. But the stock seat didn't bother me much. I just one footed at the strip light or sign. It became normal to me. I did use lower links from Rays, but it made the rear to squishy. Very weird. I thought going up in shock, spring weight, would keep the rear stiffer. It seemed to be the same as the stocker. I think its the leverage the dog bones put on the shock. It must multiply the torque laid on the rear spring. It did not pogo, but did feel strange. Every bump or hole was very squishy. Spongy, wimpy. I never felt planted. I keot thinking the rear was cracked somewhere. I checked it several times. Pulled over and inspected everything. Nothing I could find. So I installed stock links. Bingo. Game On! Confidence! Stability! It was worth a try, Suspension geometry will stay with the experts when it comes to my bike. It can be a tricky and weird thing. I was expecting the pogo!! Like everyone said. But it was just plain weird. My best uneducated guess, my rear shock was a perfect fit for my weight. But maybe on the edge, and the lowering links made it respond Like I installed weaker than stock rear spring. Go figure.
But hey! Thanks for asking.
I have had good success on my 2006 with the ATV seat cushion I got at Walmart!
Look up Coleman Maddog…. $20.00 well spent
(I don't work for any of these companies...)
