Will Invite Again: Ride to Paloduro

On Sunday, June 29th, four dual sport riders from Lubbock met at George's Restaurant in Ralls, Texas, at 7:00 a.m. The weather was ominous but after breakfast we rode through light rain to Floydada, Silverton, and Claude where we filled up with gas. We then went to a location a few miles West of Goodnight and took some dirt ranch and county roads that go South through the canyon by the Paloduro Comminity and ranch HQ. We got back on a highway near South Brice. None of us had seen these very dry and dusty fifty miles of roads before and we wanted to take a look.

If you would like to join us on our next ride, we will list it here and would like to meet you for breakfast and enjoy your company on the ride.

How was your trip

Joined this forum today. How was your trip? I would like to attend the Paloduro trip. Is it this weekend?

Revog, it was last weekend and we had a great time. Class One roads were a little dry and dusty with quite a bit of sand. We rode through rain to get there and would have like some rain in the canyon or basin. It's the old JA Ranch mostly and it was worthwhile. We are now trying to figure out a route from Double Mountain to Justiceburg and will keep you advised of the date for that trip.

It appears we have lost Christopher’s ride report so I will just attach his photos and my photos (that I got from Christopher Ross) and you can use your imagination. A picture is worth a thousand . . .

Actually, it was a fun and very easy 50 miles of Class 1 public roads with one dropped bike and one flat and tube change. Our photographer did not take the old house at Paloduro that was the JA Ranch HQ. The wonderful old house has been maintained and is still in use.

The ride could be accompanied by a tour through Palo Duro Canyon Park and through any of the public dirt roads in the Park. It was a good beginner ride without any difficulty or danger. It took us through a big basin opening up from Mulberry, Palo Duro, and Tule canyons. A solo rider with a problem might have a very long walk to get help.

Go and enjoy.

I would love to ride this area. Can you recommend some specific dirt roads? I was looking at the Caprock Canyons Trailway, but it does not allow motorcycles.

Texas Red,

Go to Google Earth and put in Goodnight, TX and then Clarendon, TX. Make sure the features box for roads is checked. Track the county roads that run South out of each town. You will want to go by the Paloduro community for sure to see the old JA Hq ranch house. Trace the roads all the way to South Brice and then go ride them with a pal. The county roads are clearly marked as such and roads that begin with a "P" like "P1234" are private roads. Most of the ranchers that I know really don't want anyone on their private roads and can get unpleasant about trespassers. Starting out of Clarendon and going to Paloduro and then doing some backtrackig to come out at South Brice would be my recommendation. You will cover about fifty miles of lonely road so plan ahead to avoid a long walk. And have fun and remember to take some photos.
