Posting Photos to the KLR Forum

Since PhotoBucket pulled the plug on free photo hosting with direct links to Forums it’s been a bit of a crap shoot trying to get pictures embedded in posts. After trying a number of different methods I would like to offer the following instructions/suggestions for those who want to add pictures to their posts. We’ll try and keep this as simple as possible.

There are a number of different ways you can insert an image to display within a post you make. One way is to have the Forum host the image via the attachment system, another is to have the Forum host the picture via the VB Image Host system or by linking to an image that you have hosted elsewhere. There are advantages and limitations to each of the options. Personally I prefer to use a 3rd party hosting site.

I will briefly discuss the Attachment and VB Image options and then concentrate on 3rd party hosting.

1. As An Attachment To A Forum Post

When you start a new topic or use the Quick Reply on a Forum thread there is a Drag and Drop File Upload area directly underneath the text input area. Simply drag the file you want to attach to this area and when you post your message it will be attached. This applies to other file formats along with pictures. This method unfortunately has some strict limitations. Pictures for example are limited to 488kb and there likely is a dimensional limitation too but I’m not sure what it is at this time. When your picture is posted using this method it will appear as a thumbnail at the bottom of your post. To view it full size requires the viewer to mouse click it and it will open. However it does not open in a new window and many times I’ve closed a picture window only to realize I should have clicked the back button.

2. VB Image Host

This is another method where the picture is hosted on the Forum itself. You will find the VB Image Host option in the Forum menu bar at the top of the window. Click the area and choose Upload An Image from the drop down menu. You will then be taken to another window where you go through the motions of choosing your picture and uploading it using the Host It button. Once uploaded the window will display your uploaded images. Under the image will be some file and link information. Copy and Paste the BB Code IMG information into a Forum post and your picture will be displayed in the post.

Like the Attachment option VB Image Host has it’s limitations.
Allowed file types .gif , .jpg , .png , .bmp
Max image size allowed - 1024 KB
Max image dimension allowed - 1024 x 768
Max number of images allowed for you - 50

3. 3rd Party Hosting with Direct Link

This is probably the best option for both control of the photo and dealing with the Forum limitations. There are a number of sites that offer "FREE" photo hosting. Equally as many paid sites. Free sites will usually have advertising to keep it free. Some sites require you to create a Account others allow anonymous posting and some allow both. Creating an account will allow you to control your photos. If it’s something you want to delete in the future, you will need to create an account. From what I can see anonymous sites don’t offer any way of deleting a photo once it’s uploaded. So the choice is yours in which way you want to go.

Below is a list of free hosting sites that I have found to be relatively easy to use and through testing each one was able to post pictures on this Forum.

PostImage (Unlimited Bandwidth, Free to use but compresses image)

LensDump (Unlimited Bandwidth, Raw Uncompressed Image, Keeps Exif Data, More features for registered users and Free to use, 100MB max image file size)

CubeUpload (Simple interface, Unlimited Bandwidth, Raw Uncompressed images, Free to use, 5MB max image file size)

https://image.frl (Anonymous hosting only. Accepts most common image files and serves original quality as formatted?

I ended up choosing the PostImage site as my preference and will use it for some basic instructions. The other sites are similar in procedure. I just found the interface simplest at PostImage.

Once to set up your account you can start uploading images to the site. To link directly to an image hosted elsewhere, you'll first need to get the direct URL to the image you want to embed within your post. Direct URL's will end with the file format of the image, such as .jpg, .png, .gif, and etc. Often times you can locate the direct URL of an image from the share options when viewing the image on the hosting service. An example of a direct image URL would be something like: https://s26.postimg.org/qp7t3axah/KAWASAKI-_KLR-650.jpg

On Post Image click the picture you want to embed.

Click the Share button.

From the Menu that appears click the button at the end of the Direct Link line. This copies the link to the Clipboard.

Now you are ready to add it to your Forum message.

Paste the direct link code into the "insert image" option on the forum (where it requests the Image URL):

Select the Create Thread option (or Reply to Thread), and your post will go live into the forum.

To add more photos, make sure the blinking cursor in the text editor is below your current image and then repeat either of the above steps for each photo. Remember that the photo is going to paste wherever the blinking cursor is on the text editor page.

New suggestions for posting photos to the Forum. These have been copied to other areas in the Forum to make them easily accessible in photo heavy areas. Commenting, questions, suggestions are only open in this thread.
