Advice sought: GPS and Mount.

Good Evening all Wise and Knowledgeable KLR riders,

I am interested in your opinions as to the best GPS system and mount for the KLR. It would be optimal if you could use it with gloves on, and that it was weather proof. I would also like to be able to draw power directly fro the battery. I ask for you wise cracks and comments.

Thank you, Snakeboy66

Life is a ride that should be thouroughly enjoyed. ATGATT!

Best?? That's tough.. I'm one of the old school guys who uses a 2610. It works for me because I have the same set up on all of my bikes and just swap the GPS back and forth.. When I needed a GPS that was motorcycle friendly, there wasn't much out there for choices.. The Zumo line seems like good stuff.

The one thing that's always been a steady is the use of the RAM mounts. They make great mounts for most GPS's and bikes.. I typically go to Tony at https://www.cyclenutz.com/ for my needs, actually just installing a GPS mount on my 32 year old BMW twin..

I agree with Paper, Ram mounts and Garmin Zumo. It's the only GPS designed for M/C use. If the Zumo is too spendy, Garmin has a couple of Nuvi models that are waterproof.

RAM MOUNTS. for reasons paper mentioned, and yes, able to keep your gloves on, you could probably do what you need to with your eyes shut, but not recommended. Like Paper my GPS is old..sure the younger feller's here can tell you which current unit is best(most motorcycle friendly) and where to get it. I get my RAM stuff from Whitehorse Gear out of North Conway,NH. They have EXCELLENT customer service in my experience with them.Hope something here helps. Good luck&and ENJOY!!!

Ditto on the Ram Mounts and Tony at Cyclenutz. I have an older Garmin Nuvi 755 or something like that. Since it isn't water proof, or resistant for that matter, I keep it in a Ram Aquabox. Works perfectly, keeps it bone dry and the touch screen still functions very well. I was just too dang cheap to fork out the cash for a waterproof unit that has a picture of a motorcycle on it instead of a car. The Aquabox was cheap and works as intended. I just pop it out of the Aquabox and toss it in the Jeep (also too cheap to buy two GPS'!).

Good Evening All,

I have ordered, received and installed the RAM Garmin 855 handle bar mount. This is a sweet setup. Thanks for the advice.

Good Evening All,

The Gamin is a few years old and came from one of the vehicles. I will replace the GPS in the vehicle with a new one and eventually by a weather proof GPS for the KLR. In the meantime repurposing is the word.

I plan on getting a RAM mount for my Garmin Nuvi 255w. One thing I noticed about the RAM mount - you can get a plate for a new Garmin and not re-purchase the mounting hardware. This is good for re-purposing!

The sun shade is excellent!! One thing.. You can make a similar one out of old inner tube and velcro.. We're KLR riders, you know.
