off road lights

So i went on a late night ride through the desert. I out rode my light and could not see technical sections. I keept pressing on the whole time i decided to add more light so that would never happen again. I read this forum got some ideas, here is what i did and here is some correct info for the 2013 model. I used fog lights on front and led on the sides. I now have light in all the places i need. I used a relay and t taped into the brown with grey wire. The lights are on a switch that only works with bike on. I took my time to make it look like factory wiring. The fogs point high and shine low and to the sides, leds act like rock lights for jeeps. I can look down and see whats around me. I put switch below dash, and i had everything but the leds so it only cost 12bucks and a few hours time. It was also a good excuse to give the bike a once over while it was apart.

Are those the Ebay LEDs theyre selling? Im thinking of lights too.WHats the end result?
can you see more of the trail?

Worth it!

I used halogen. I will replace with led. It works great, the downside is when I drive slow the bike can not make enough power to sustain the lighting draw. It does work perfect going about 30. Works for 20 min. Or so going slow in technical stuff. If I turn of high beam or aux lights goes back to normal. I do not use or need them all the time but if you have ever rode in the desert at night you know the stock light is useless when ridding up a steep windy dirt hill. The side lights let you see the next obstacle before you turn into it.

I am definitely not a fan of either LED lights or HID retrofitted into halogen housings, but they are the perfect application for the KLR because it can't keep up with the electrical demands.

You might consider going to an HID low-beam to conserve some power to run the auxiliary lights. That might allow you to keep the halogen fogs; the LED equivalent are really spendy.

Okay is 2x18 watts too much of a load for the puny KLR stator? Not sure what the amperage draw is. these are CREE LEDS.

Mine are 35 w each and it's ok. I think you would be fine. You can change headlight and tail light if needed. One step at a time.

I just replaced my 2 5W LEDs with 2 20W LEDs. The light is far better and the stator keeps up. I'm going to add a PWM controller to allow dimming so I still have the triangle of lights without blinding other drivers. I won't mention the manufacturer until they resolve the warranty issues that they've been delaying on.

I greeted Shoganai at the finish line of her double cross-country ride (Eastport, ME to La Push, WA in 70 hours then the reverse trip in 71 hours). We went to a lobster shack as she decompressed after her trip. She related one incident where she could see "something" up ahead but couldn't make it out with the HID headlight plus PIAA spots. Turned on her Cree spots and saw elk. The Cree lights are the ones on her fork lowers.
