batteries for keeping going...

I just had a batter go out, and bought one from Pep Boys. They also sold me a pretty cool portable charger. After burning my hands with acid filling the thing , it wouldn't charge. Took it back, and they said the charger was probably bad. Spend $5 more on an "upgraded charger". Battery still wouldn't charge. Bought one from Advanced Auto, and worked just fine with the charger. Got a refund from Pep Boys, and my original battery back. Thoughts:
1) should add D.I. water and try to charge the old batter so I have a back-up
2) get come batter acid and try to use the old core
3) if I do this, how long will the battery last before it loses charge, so the idea of having a back-up battery is stupid

I have always used Yuasa batteries on the klr and they usually last 4 years. You can't refill an old battery and expect reliability.

Yeah, every time I put a few drops of distilled water in the battery for my Honda (which does NOT cook batteries like the KLR) I am glad I put a 'Big Crank' in my KLR.

Just did an image search for 'big crank' to make sure I had the name right. Typed 'big crack' by accident. Not the same thing.
