Hello from Vancouver, BC

Don't have a bike yet, but have decided on a KLR and just waiting until winter to pull the trigger.

This will be my first motorbike (some dirtbiking as a kid) and I'm so excited to get riding. I've got 2 friends who've decided to all buy bikes and head to Alaska in 2013. Ambitious, but we've got a good plan laid out, including a number of weekender rides to prepare. Really looking forward to making it mine (read, "farkling") to make it ready for the trip.

Will hope to document purchase, ownership, initial views on riding a bike, trip planning, etc. Just cause I know you can't get enough...

Thanks for all the info so far, it's such a great resource for those of us just starting out.

Matthew.

Hey Matthew and welcome to the forum! You've chosen a great bike and it's more than capable of getting you to Alaska and back as well as anywhere else you decide to explore. You are fortunate to live in a prime location for dualsport riding. So close to many great places. If you haven't read Rene Cormier's book "University of Gravel Roads", check it out. Great read. He's not too far from you in Edmonton. Be sure to keep us informed on your progress... Gonna be a looonngg winter for you pal!

Welcome to the forum, Matthew. Sounds like a great plan to me and I applaud you for taking it on. Get your KLR, ride it, and decide how you want to tailor it to fit your needs for the trip and everyday riding.

Whatever you decide on, it's a pretty good bet somebody here has already done it and can offer some sound advice, be it wrenching, riding, trip planning, you name it. Lots of good folks here willing to help out.

Don't wait till winter, buy now. You can't ride a bike in Canada in the winter.

My Kaw Barn - 2004 KLR, 2006 Concours (sold), 1997 Bayou 400.

"It's a friggen motorcycle, it's not supposed to be comfortable, quiet or safe. The wind noise is supposed to hurt your ears, the seat should be hard and riding it should make you shit your pants every now and then. "

Looking for new/newish one - found a 2011 at the dealer today for $5700 which seems like a great deal. Winter riding is still possible here, although it's generally to test out the rain gear....
Looking forward to get riding. Thanks for the welcome guys!
