new "here" not to mc's

Hello folks, I've been riding for a lot of years. Started on the street went to dual purpose then dirt and back to street. Riding a RoadStar 102ci right now but its going on the block in April. Once sold I've decided on a KLR650. Thought long and hard about what I wanted from a mc. Ill need a lower seat as I have a 31" inseam so 35" seat height will raise voice a couple octives. Going to do ALOT of reading here. I work on my own bikes so I may ask a few questions and hope they are not too redundant. I'm a retired Military Sargeant. I need to get off that heavy street bike and back to something I can take up that dirt trail, again......Mike

Well,
It's not really 35 inches. The machine will sag a little when
you get on it, and a lowered seat ought to take care of the rest. I've got a 30 inch inseam and that's all I need. Then again, I weight 215 lbs.
My friend Paul, who's more like a 28 inch inseam did put on the lowering links...but I wouldn't think you'd need that....just the ability to slide over a butt cheek at the stop lights.

Welcome and thanks for serving.
I got turned down at MEPS (spinal curvature)
so I make the full metal jacket being sent downrange
at a foundry making boomstuff for General Dynamics
and US Ordnance. (still gotta do my part fer the flag)

I'm 45 and on m/c number 8 and by FAR the KLR does more things
and goes more places than anything I've ridden or owned.
This is my last bike hands down. How's that for saying it's a great scooter?
It does a little of everything, none of it perfect.
Still it's an absolute hoot to ride! It can't really shine in any one
specific arena as it's designed to be so versatile, and that's where
it shines. Interstates to dunes n' mud to camping to commuting
to cruising to hanging a knee in the curves. Does it all.

Thanks for all the welcomes folks. I'm glad I decided on the KLR. I need the fuel tank capacity and ability to run the super slab if I have to. It will take me awhile to get used to a light bike again as my RoadStar is right at 800#. I ride, so selling it with 26,000 miles will be tough. I'm looking forward to putting 100,000 on my next bike(KLR)....Ride safe everyone........Mike
