After thinking about it for about 2 years, I finally took the plunge and bought a 2001 KLR 650. It has 13k miles, and needs a little love, but mechanically it's sound and runs well. I had the pleasure of riding it home on Wednesday and put about 300 miles on it.
I'm actually surprised with how comfortable it is, and how much fun I had riding it. My other bike (for now, I'm trying to sell it to finance fixing up and upgrading the KLR) is a 2006 Ninja 650R. It's a much better streetbike, but I actually think I might enjoy riding the KLR better. It's a competely different mindset, much more laid back. I was happy with how the KLR felt cruising at Highway and Interstate speeds, although I might get a bigger front sprocket for my commute. It handled better than I expected as well.
My motorcyle history consists of: Early 80's Suzuki 2 stroke enduro (TL 185 maybe?),1982 XS650 (my first street bike), 1996 Yamaha Seca II, 2001 Triumph Sprint, 2006 Kawasaki Ninja 650R, and now a 2001 KLR 650. I'd estimate I've put about 80k + miles in total on those bikes.
I'm very much looking forward to getting to know and enjoy my KLR. I have a new front tire on order, and will be doing the "doo" mod soon, as well as a few others. I really can't wait to start exploring all those trails I looked at as I rode by on the Ninja
I heard about this forum from a poster who also posts on Sport-touring.net, Dantesdame. Much thanks to her for answering all my questions about the KLR, it was very helpful!
Glad to be on the forum, and looking forward to getting to e-know you!
