New to the forum

Hello everyone. I'm new to the forum but I have had a couple klr's over the years. Now I have an 06 that I've had since 07. It's been sitting the entire time cause a friend bought it new as his first bike. It scared him and he let it set out in the sun for a year so all the plastics faded. Then I bought it as a second and a friend ran through my fence on it and broke the front fender and cracked the fairing. He ripped his ear off. Yes I know he should have wore a helmet but argued and was 38 my mistake. Anyway I just got new plastics ordered. Now I'm trying to find the parts to add a kick start

Welcome aboard,

Just wondering why you want to kick start?

Thanks,
Just as a back up. I will be using it in back country alone and just want the extra insurance.

I understand, I almost didn't want a KLR because there was no kick starter for a back up. You should know however, with a good battery the starter is very reliable. Just think, how many guys do you see installing cranks on there Jeeps.

I know but heck if I could get a crank that would work I'd probably put it on my jeep. Lol

Welcome aboard.

I use my KLR as a first and the
KE 125 as a backup. lol

I ran down the battery once using the
headlite too long with the bike off.
With the neutral and clutch switches disabled
I was able to push start it really easy by
hitting the starter and releasing the clutch
lever at the same time. Found a slight grade
but enough to get fired back up. It would be
pretty hard to do on level ground. I couldn't
get up to the critical 5-6 mph needed to roll
the engine over in 2nd.

Enjoy the site!,

You'll need about a '96 or earlier clutch assembly, if you want to transplant a kick-starter onto a KLR650, AFAIK. Plus, a whole raft of specialized parts, perhaps cannibalized off a KLR600.

Fundamentally, the job's in the "TOO HARD" box for most folks, IMHO.

Do you have a hand-crank on your automobile, or your 4X4 off-road vehicle? No? Than . . . maybe you can muddle through the boonies with an electric-start only motorcycle.

BTW, bump-starting doesn't require engaging the starter; ignition key on, kill switch in RUN position, you're good to go. Pre-'08 ignitions are entirely separate from the battery circuit, bump-starting always remains an option.
