New to the forum

Hi i bought my first bike a few months back 05 KLR 650. Only mods are a supertrapp slip on and jet kit and has 12k miles on it now. Bike is great for me for first bike. Bought it for my 80mi round trip commute to camp pendleton and home everyday. Any recommendations or tips from you guys would be great. thanks

80 mile round trip commute - respect!
If it were me I'd get a nice seat, more street oriented tires, comfy grips, good street helmet, good gear, mp3 player with earbuds, 16t sprocket, cruise control. That should treat you well.

WELCOME aboard.

Thanks for the welcomes. Savage the bike already has pirelli scorpion tires on it. I am getting a full face helmet, better gloves and a nice jacket for my gear as i am running a offroad helmet and goggles and offroad gloves right now on my 20 mile round trip and it sucks at 6am in the morning. I am going to 16t front and 42t rear sprocket and gonna get handlebar guards and heated grips to jsut to help out. The seat is already comfy to me but guess i will find out more once i start the 40 mile journey.

Welcome to the forum, redbandit05. You'll really appreciate the full-face helmet, especially if you're riding where it's windy or in traffic. You'll figure out what you need. My only suggestion is a good set of earplugs for the ride. Even with a full-face "road" helmet, that wind noise will take its toll on your ears. I just find riding much more enjoyable and relaxing when I'm wearing earplugs. Give 'em a try if you haven't yet.

Bienvenido redbandit05! I'm new here myself - only a few months on the site. However, this place has been quite welcoming, and I'm learning all sorts of things - as well as seeing farkles that I'd like to do to my own KLR...

My son is currently stationed on Pendleton, and he's looking at purchasing a KLR of his own - just as soon as he can sell his Dodge Dakota. In fact, he just passed the BRC, and now he's gotta take the written test here in Utah when he comes home on leave so he can get the motorcycle endorsement on his license.

So, in the future, if you see a skinny Marine on a 2012 or 2013 KLR riding around Pendleton, it could be him.

I use to wear earplugs until I tried my kids cheap little mp3/radio thing with marshmellow earbuds. I keep it down low so you still hear everything just as well as with earplugs, but it helps pass the boring parts of the ride MUCH better. Just a thought.

I don't wear ear plugs....real men don't wear earplugs!!!

We are waiting for the day when we can't hear all the nagging that is going on all the time around us!...lol.

Besides I want to hear the engine and all it's funny little sounds as it purrs down the road.....just in case it makes a new sound and decides to try and get me to walk home!....lol

A good MP3 player or whatever they're called is good for the long rides in the summer......but not in traffic or all the time, just for me that is....to each their own.....sorry can't hear you over all the nagging......augh!!!!

My commute beginning next summer will be 100+ r/t so I'll be curious to know what types of mods you do on your KLR for your 80 + mile commute to improve your ride. I did the doo and added Moose Racing clutch and brake guards (similar to barkbusters), but outside of that I've done nothing else to my 2011.
