Desperately seeking info/help!!!

Hello - last fall my hubby & I switched from Honda to KLR & planned our 30th anniversary trip to N.S. from Ont. We purchased a 2009 for him & a 2010 for me.

We are stuck in a hotel near Freeport Maine because my bike died during heavy rain. It felt just like it does when needing a switch to reserve but backfired as I pulled off & geared down & died.

My poor hubby has been in the parking lot since yesterday, in the rain, checking anything & everything. He has narrowed it down to the ignition coil as there is no spark even after changing the plug. He can't find anywhere local to test the coil let alone find a new one (if that is indeed the problem).

I am saddened that this special trip is causing so much stress & worry on my husband when it should be a relaxing time of celebration.

If you have any insight/suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I will check back to the forum regularly to see if any responses.

Thanks for listening.

You might try swapping coils just to be sure of your diagnosis. If you get spark with the "good coil" then it would seem you've found it and you need a coil. If it still doesn't spark it may be some wet wiring, loose connection, wiring harness short, etc.

Hi Trundlebike - just shared your input with Pat & he said that was his next move. To take coil off his bike & try it to confirm that is the problem. Thank you!!

It occurs to me that if the problem isn't the coil you should be able to bypass the wiring by running a wire from the positive post on the battery directly to the positive (red?) wire on the coil. Do you still have headlights and horn?

Could it be the side-stand switch or the clutch lever switch?
Tom posted this, if it helps:

The side stand switch and clutch switch are good places to start. The point of the hot wire suggestion was to get it to a place or repair in case the "in the field" effort doesn't work. Never had to mess with it on my '02 but there appears to be a harness connector for the exciter coil that you might want to check. Sorry to be so vague; not too familiar with these i.e. I know they exist but never had to mess with them. Is it still raining?
