Not an owner... YET!

Hey everyone! I'm Josh. I'm new to the forum. I am from Oklahoma, joined the Navy out of Southeast Kansas, currently stationed in the Central Valley in California near Fresno, and I am transferring to Virginia Beach, VA in about 6 or 7 months. I joined the forum mostly to find information about the KLR650. I am currently a cruiser owner. I have a Honda VTX1300R that I ride all the time. I'm getting bored with it though. It's fun to ride, but limited to where it can ride. I have been looking at dual sports for a few weeks now and I keep coming back to the KLR650. The problem is getting the wife on board with it. A friend of mine owns one but never rides his anymore due to having a new baby and busy with life. I really like the look and idea of the KLR but am skeptical about buying one. I would like to know the pros and cons of the KLR. I would like some unbiased information if at all possible. Any and all information would be great. What do you guys get for MPG highway, city, offroad? Just tell me everything you can about it. Thanks.

I would buy a used but in good shape stock Gen1 with low miles and then use the money saved for some crash bars, heated grips new seat etc. Heck here is one on a carrier

Welcome to the forum. I am pretty new to the KLR still but my belief is that it is a nice all-around motorcycle. It will allow you to do a wide variety of riding which is what I really enjoy about dual sport motorcycles. It is not the best at any one thing. If you ride primarily on the street, there are motorcycles that are more powerful, comfortable, etc. On the dirt, there are bikes that are much better. But that is the price you pay for having something that can do a everything. The KLR probably is not the best in any specific area but it is one of the best at everything in my opinion.

I hope you are able to get one and enjoy.

Welcome to the forum!
16 years Navy, 5 years KLR owner.

The KLR is a fantastic middle of the road bike. Very affordable to own and (properly) maintain. It was my sole means of fun and transport through a stint of financial hardship (was married at one point, hence hard times). Definately a bike for the masses.

I average 200-230 miles before I fill up. Needed to switch to reserve only a few times during long freeway runs. Depending on several factors like terrain, speed, weight, etc.. your results will vary. Off road riding will obviously depend on how much your revving the engine. My particular style of riding off road, the rpms are generally in the lower range.

I have made several long range super slab trips from San Diego to central Utah (about an 8 hour ride). Can it be done? Yes! Can it be done more comfortably? Yes! Can it be done more uncomfortably? Yes!

Like I said before, the KLR can do alot and do it just good enough. I'm a KLR fan for sure, and I love its shortfalls along with its strengths.

I agree with what everyone has said. Plus they're hard to break and relatively easy to fix.

How else can you leave your house, drive through the twisties, go through a nice gravel road to a more challenging and more remote road, put your kickstand down and camp in the middle of nowhere?
