Lovin' my KLR650!

Hello all,

my name is Isaac, and I just got my 97 KLR650 a couple weeks ago. As cliche as it sounds, it's changed my life! I just want to ride!

The guy I bought it from wasn't a motorcycle rider, and it sat in his garage for the past year, until his wife made him sell it.

I've given it a basic tune up, and put several hundred miles on it. When it's running, it runs like a swiss watch, but when it's cold, it doesn't like to start.

I think I need a new carburetor, and I want to tackle that project ASAP, especially since there's rain in the forecast for the next few days. New carbs ain't cheap!

I'm looking at eBay, but I don't think the newer carbs (from bikes made 2007 and up) are compatible with my 97. Is this right?

Can anyone recommend the most practical method of swapping carbs without (hopefully) spending upwards of $500?

I look forward to sharing my experiences and learning from this forum. Thanks!

If it were mine I would definitely try cleaning it first especially since it sat for a year. You might want to try some Seafoam, a gas additive that may help clean it out in the fly. Both of these much cheaper than replacing a carb.

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into the seafoam. After I bought it and gave it the basic tune up I rode it a hundred miles or so then took it to my local bike mechanic. He said the needle was set way too far out, so he readjusted it to the factory position, and I think he cleaned it. It operated very well for the next hundred miles, but it seems to be malfunctioning again.
