Hello to All

I am 55 and just retired from 31 years in the government(US Marines and federal law enforcement). I live in far west Texas (El Paso) and have just acquired a 1998 KLR650.

As my signon indicates, I also own a KTM950S. I acquired the KLR as a spare bike and also to outfit it for a trip to Tierra del Fuego next fall. I love the 950 but the price on the KLR was hard to beat. And if I have some major misfortune in Central or South America, I can leave the KLR in place without major financial loss.

I have been dual sport riding for about 5 years. Previous bikes have included a VStrom1000, KTM640E, KTM640Adv, and BMWK1200GT. I presently have a KTM950S as well as the KLR650. My wife rides a Honda 750 Shadow and I have a hard time keeping her off it.

During 2008, I plan on riding to Newfoundland, Alaska, and perhaps TDF. I have ridden to Alaska in 2003 and several times to Copper Canyon. I am always up for a quick trip to the Big Bend or down to Copper Canyon(only 420 miles door to door).

I plan on using this forum and a couple others for advice on upgrading the KLR with emphasis on reliability. I don't want to spend major dollars (have the 950 for that) but the KLR has a reputation for something that will go around the world without costing an arm and a leg. Rich 915 588 5054

Welcome aboard.Thankyou for your service to our country.Ours is a service oriented house also. The klr,for the most part can be fixed with bailing wire and duct tape . There are several small items, mostly personal choices, but the one thing is the doo. That has to be addressed.Just do a search. There are several people in your neck of the woods who can lend a hand if need be.

Post pics,
We always like pics

Welcome

Welcome to the forum. It's nice to hear from another Dual Sport rider in West Texas. I'm in Midland. I'm always looking for some place to ride and others to ride with. Let me know if you're out this way... might be able to hook up and do a little riding out here.
