Well I finally did it I got me a dirt bike ... kind of. Well lets back up. 3 years ago I got into riding and quickly built up my passion. Started with a 96 VFR, and then I found a 79 XS1100 Special for a steal so i had to get it. It was rough around the edges but it was a great machine. I went to school and became a motorcycle tech to work on it, I rebuilt it twice.
A few months ago I got a new job and my manager is a big dirt bike guy and is part of a local club that does enduro, hare scrambler, and dual sport events. So I really wanted to join him because he talked it up, pair that with I'm scared of the VFR because I high sided a year ago due to cold tire on a 35F morning.
Well I just bought a ninja 250 that needed/s a complete engine rebuild ($300 for the bike + $150 for parts and specialty tools) and that is nearing completion. I listed my other bike looking for a trade for a street legal dirt bike that I could super moto. Along came a man who we shall name Tim looking to trade his 2007 KLR 650 for my XS1100 we agreed to a straight trade and viola here I am.
Picture can be found here.
just kidding I need to post more well thats ok I have a few questions so maybe I can get my post count up.
1 the stock head light is not very good as I've been told but the upper stay was damaged and the light points up kinda high.
I was thinking of installing 2 36 watt led light bars in the same space one spot and one flood using the flood for normal light and spot+flood for high beam. I would post links but I can't does that sound reasonable?
I am still looking to supermoto this bike I know its not the best but I'm just looking to make it a fun street bike, any tips?
I've been doing some research and what mods are best or would you all do other then doohicky and 22 cent mod?
I know thread lock is going to be one of my best friends for this bike but does anyone know bolt sizes for this bike I'm missing a few on the plastics? I want to upgrade the lower subframe bolt.
Does any one have any tips to make it a bit easier to mount on the dirt. I do the stand on the peg routine and I don't really trust it on wet dirt, should i be afraid or is it pretty solid?
Last I'm looking at making my own crash guards with a piper bender and a welder what size pipe should i use 1/2 inch 3/4 inch or 1 inch?
I think that should get me started
