Hi all

Hello , my name is Alan & I'm from Northern California . Just pick up a 2008 KLR .Have not been able to ride it yet . Its in need of a new front wheel . I keep hearing about these bikes blowing oil through there heads ? Any truth to that ? Thanks

No one can tell you in advance if and/or how much oil an engine will use at different speeds. They all use a little and some use more and not just the 2008 KLR650.

The good news is that you are aware that the oil level is important and you will check the level on a regular basis. By checking regularly - every fuel fill - you will learn how much if any and at what speeds you KLR may use some oil. You don't even have to fool with a dip stick like on my truck. Just hold the bike level the same way each time you check and take a quick look at the sight glass. Check after you have finished with the fueling to give the oil a little time to drain down from the upper engine.

Oil

Hi , thanks for the info ! I've had bikes all my life ,so no problem with keeping oil level up . The po I got the bike from told me these are known for excessive oil use . And I keep seeing references to this problem the more info I gather from different websites .The po has the 705cc upgrade w/ barrel to be installed by me in the future . Have you not found this to be the case with the 2008 & up models ? My biggest need is a new front rim ,as he ran into a railroad track that pretzel-ed the OEM one . That is why he lost interest in it & I got it . It only has 8000 miles on it . Any help you guys can give me in getting a rim somewhere at a price I can afford would be great ? Been searching Ebay with no luck so far . Thanks again

My 2008 started burning more oil than I liked at about 20,000 miles. I installed a 650 kit and that fixed it.

The gen2 KLR actually have larger/stronger spokes than the gen1 2007 and older. There are places that specialize in straightening wheels. Try googling "motorcycle wheel repair". Woody's Wheel Works has a good reputation. WoodysWheelWorks

You can also ask the service department of your local AnyBrand Motorcycle shop where they send wheels for repair.

Thanks Gomotor, never considered having it repaired .The rim is real bad & just for that at Bikebandit they want $300 for rim only . But worth checking into . Was hoping to get lucky & find one cheap ? What do you mean a 650 kit ? Its 650cc all ready ? Is it not ?

GoMotor, How is your oil consumption? How many miles? How many miles since last 'alteration' of oil supply??

I bought the 2008 KLR new in 2007. I didn't make notes on oil usage then.

Kawasaki did an in-warranty re-ring at about 20,000 miles when the usage rate was around 800 miles per quart. The rate then went up to around 3,000 miles per quart.

I installed the 685 kit at 39,000 miles when the usage was back down to about 800 miles per quart. The rate then went up to close to 6,000 miles per quart.

Now at 105,000 miles the rate is down to 867 miles per quart averaged over 3,469 miles.

It looks like it is time for a new piston, but I have a 2011 KLR that I am putting miles on now, so I am not in a hurry to work on the 2008.

Oh, oh! Paul has just accused Gomotor of making a mistake when he knows full well that Gomotor has only made one mistake in his life and that for research purposes. I heard that someone told him that he was wrong and he believed him. His mistake, of course, was believing him.
