IF you can find a nice pre 08 or 06 and down as it were to lets say 2000 at the oldest,,I'd snap those up before the 08 and up personaly. I do not like the bodywork on the new version, far too brittle, semi expensive, the rad is not protected well imho until you install crash bars, but they have gotten better oil wise ater 2010 imho I'm not sure what they did to solve the issue in real life as you hear all sort of reasons on the net etc, and I don't know what they did to stop the oil in today's bikes...OR does it still drink at highway speeds...? I'm not tuned in like I used to be. BUT the older versions never burnt oil unless you beat the crap out of them and neglected them from what I have seen. I have put in over 30 big bore kits in these bikes now and mostly the gen II versions...the others were all after more power where the GEN II bikes were after fixing the oil drinking. IF you like the old school styling etc I would go for one for sure before the newer versions. They do not have as good as front brake, front forks are slightly larger on the gen II version, the swing arm is a standard steel square type, old school, so what?, and you must do the DOO....the newer version has a stronger DOO but the DOO springs are simply JUNK until just reciently but still I would strongly say to do it and use the torsion spring over the coil spring. The charging slightly changed on the newer versions also, better or not...that is debatable also? So, no matter what version you buy or decide upon, imho if you want to ride off the gravel roads you need crash bars or a plastic tank to protect either rads and tank and front fairing, stronger rear spring, and do your DOO....the rest is up to you....but the older version shouldn't burn oil unless abused.
The newer version burned oil because the rings didn't sit evenly on the sides of the bore in the cylinder....if you took a cylinder off the bike, slipped in a set of the rings and shone a flashlight up from the bottom you could see areas where the light went between the rings and the wall of the cylinder!!! So, how can it not burn oil at any speed.....that is what I have seen firsthand with all bad oil burners that needed big bore kits installed.
